This paper studies the challenging problem of energy minimization for data gathering over a multiple-sources single-sink communication substrate in wireless sensor networks by exploring the energy-latency tradeoffs using rate adaptation techniques. We consider a real-time scenario for mission-critical applications, where the data gathering must be performed within a specified latency constraint. We first propose an offline numerical optimization algorithm with performance analysis for a special case with a complete binary data gathering tree. Then, by discretizing the transmission time, we present a simple, distributed on-line protocol that relies only on the local information available at each sensor node. Extensive simulations were conducted for both long and short-range communication scenarios using two different source placement models. We used the baseline of transmitting all packets at the highest speed and shutting down the radios afterwards. Our simulation results show that compared with this baseline, up to 90% energy savings can be achieved by our techniques (both off-line and on-line), under different settings of several key system parameters 相似文献

Alumina-forming ODS superalloys are excellent oxidation-resistant materials. Their resistance relies upon the establishment of a stable, slow-growing, and adherent -alumina. In the present investigation, these alloys exhibited unstable and relatively less adherent -alumina phase, which increased the oxidation rate in the transient stage and converted into -alumina in the later part of the exposure. The oxide-growth process was found to depend upon various parameters such as temperature, time, and presence of an active elecment in the superalloy. Characterization carried out by XRD, SEM/EDAX, and AES on oxidized ODS and non-ODS alloys demonstrated a significant influence of the active element, Y, on the transformation of - to -alumina. SIMS analysis of two-stage oxidation at 900°C for two different durations evidently showed that the change in the transport process is due to -to--alumina transformation. On the basis of these results, a new and consistent mechanism is proposed to explain the influence of -alumina and its transformation on growth kinetics and the effect of yttrium on the transformation leading to good scale adherence and oxidation resistance. 相似文献

In this paper we present several new results in the theory of homogeneous multiprocessor scheduling. We start with some assumptions about the behavior of tasks, with associated precedence constraints, as processor power is applied. We assume that as more processors are applied to a task, the time taken to compute it decreases, yielding some speedup. Because of communication, synchronization, and task scheduling overhead, this speedup increases less than linearly with the number of processors applied. We also assume that the number of processors which can be assigned to a task is a continuous variable, with a view to exploiting continuous mathematics. The optimal scheduling problem is to determine the number of processors assigned to each task, and task sequencing, to minimize the finishing time.These assumptions allow us to recast the optimal scheduling problem in a form which can be addressed by optimal control theory. This work processes linear prediction (LP) residual in the time domain at three different levels, extracts speaker information,
and demonstrates their significance and also different nature for text-independent speaker recognition. The subsegmental analysis
considers LP residual in blocks of 5 msec with shift of 2.5 msec to extract speaker information. The segmental analysis extracts
speaker information by processing in blocks of 20 msec with shift of 2.5 msec. The suprasegmental speaker information is extracted
by viewing in blocks of 250 msec with shift of 6.25 msec. The speaker identification and verification studies performed using
NIST-99 and NIST-03 databases demonstrate that the segmental analysis provides best performance followed by subsegmental analysis.
The suprasegmental analysis gives the least performance. However, the evidences from all the three levels of processing seem
to be different and combine well to provide improved performance, demonstrating different speaker information captured at
each level of processing. Finally, the combined evidence from all the three levels of processing together with vocal tract

Recently there has been an increased demand for imaging systems in support of high-speed digital printing. The required increase in performance in support of such systems can be accomplished through an effective parallel execution of image processing applications in a distributed cluster computing environment. The output of the system must be presented to a raster based display at regular intervals, effectively establishing a hard deadline for the production of each image. Failure to complete a rasterization task before its deadline will result in an interruption of service that is unacceptable. The goal of this research was to derive a metric for measuring robustness in this environment and to design a resource allocation heuristic capable of completing each rasterization task before its assigned deadline, thus, preventing any service interruptions. We present a mathematical model of such a cluster based raster imaging system, derive a robustness metric for evaluating heuristics in this environment, and demonstrate using the metric to make resource allocation decisions. The heuristics are evaluated within a simulation of the studied raster imaging system. We clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of the heuristics by comparing their results with the results of a resource allocation heuristic commonly used in this type of system. 相似文献

Speech separation is an essential part of any voice recognition system like speaker recognition, speech recognition and hearing aids etc. When speech separation is applied at the front-end of any voice recognition system increases the performance efficiency of that particular system. In this paper we propose a system for single channel speech separation by combining empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and multi pitch information. The proposed method is completely unsupervised and requires no knowledge of the underlying speakers. In this method we apply EMD to short frames of the mixed speech for better estimation of the speech specific information. Speech specific information is derived through multi pitch tracking. To track multi pitch information from the mixed signal we apply simple-inverse filtering tracking and histogram based pitch estimation to excitation source information along with estimating the number of speakers present in the mixed signal. 相似文献

This work extends the circle fitting method of Rangarajan and Kanatani (2009) to accommodate ellipse fitting. Our method, which we call HyperLS, relies on algebraic distance minimization with a carefully chosen scale normalization. The normalization is derived using a rigorous error analysis of least squares (LS) estimators so that statistical bias is eliminated up to second order noise terms. Numerical evidence suggests that the proposed HyperLS estimator is far superior to the standard LS and is slightly better than the Taubin estimator. Although suboptimal in comparison to maximum likelihood (ML), our HyperLS does not require iterations. Hence, it does not suffer from convergence issues due to poor initialization, which is inherent in ML estimators. In this sense, the proposed HyperLS is a perfect candidate for initializing the ML iterations. 相似文献

Recently, High Performance Computing (HPC) platforms have been employed to realize many computationally demanding applications
in signal and image processing. These applications require real-time performance constraints to be met. These constraints
include latency as well as throughput. In order to meet these performance requirements, efficient parallel algorithms are
needed. These algorithms must be engineered to exploit the computational characteristics of such applications.
In this paper we present a methodology for mapping a class of adaptive signal processing applications onto HPC platforms
such that the throughput performance is optimized. We first define a new task model using the salient computational characteristics
of a class of adaptive signal processing applications. Based on this task model, we propose a new execution model. In the
earlier linear pipelined execution model, the task mapping choices were restricted. The new model permits flexible task mapping
choices, leading to improved throughput performance compared with the previous model. Using the new model, a three-step task
mapping methodology is developed. It consists of (1) a data remapping step, (2) a coarse resource allocation step, and (3)
a fine performance tuning step. The methodology is demonstrated by designing parallel algorithms for modern radar and sonar
signal processing applications. These are implemented on IBM SP2 and Cray T3E, state-of-the-art HPC platforms, to show the
effectiveness of our approach. Experimental results show significant performance improvement over those obtained by previous
approaches. Our code is written using C and the Message Passing Interface (MPI). Thus, it is portable across various HPC platforms.

Urban stormwater quality is multifaceted and the use of a limited number of factors to represent catchment characteristics
may not be adequate to explain the complexity of water quality response to a rainfall event or site-to-site differences in
stormwater quality modelling. This paper presents the outcomes of a research study which investigated the adequacy of using
land use and impervious area fraction only, to represent catchment characteristics in urban stormwater quality modelling.
The research outcomes confirmed the inadequacy of the use of these two parameters alone to represent urban catchment characteristics
in stormwater quality prediction. Urban form also needs to be taken into consideration as it was found have an important impact
on stormwater quality by influencing pollutant generation, build-up and wash-off. Urban form refers to characteristics related
to an urban development such as road layout, spatial distribution of urban areas and urban design features. 相似文献
