It has been shown previously that sulfur volatiles produced byAllium plants affect the behavior of their specialist phytophages and of their specialist entomophages. The action of these compounds in protecting the leek mothAcrolepiopsis assectella against generalist entomophages was studied in comparison to the proposed original defensive role of these compounds against generalist herbivorous insects. Two ants species,Formica selysi andF. fusca, were used as generalist predators. Six behavioral criteria of the predatory behavior of the ants were studied in presence of the last-instar caterpillars (C5). C5 reared on artificial diets with or without leek components were tested, as well as C5 soaked in frass of leek-reared caterpillars or disulfide solutions. In addition, the response of the ants to pure chemicals found in leek was studied using honey solutions with or without sulfur compounds. The sulfur allelochemicals ofAllium plants have a negative action on predatory ants. Interestingly, the nonvolatile precursors of sulfur volatiles ofAllium plants seem to have a protective role for their phytophagous insects against generalist entomophages.  相似文献

Urban agriculture offers a framework for local self-reliance by provisioning food security, employment opportunities, and other community benefits. However, urban agriculture must rely on the supporting and regulating services of the soil food web. Hence, we quantified belowground biocontrol activity in urban gardens and vacant lots in two post-industrial cities using an in situ insect baiting technique. Due to the differences in habitat structure, we hypothesized that belowground biocontrol services will differ between gardens and vacant lots and the influence of habitat structure would differ with the type of biocontrol organism. Results revealed that biocontrol activity, as assessed by % mortality of baited insects, varied between 51% and 98% with higher activity often recorded in vacant lots than gardens. Major contributions to bait insect mortality were by ants, followed by microbial pathogens and entomopathogenic nematodes, respectively. Ants showed higher (p < 0.0001) % mortality in vacant lots (60% ± 33.4%) than in urban gardens (33.3% ± 22.2%) whereas microbial pathogens exhibited higher (p < 0.0001) mortality in gardens (27.8% ± 15%) than vacant lots (8.3% ± 16.7%). Ants caused higher (p < 0.0001) mortality when larger-mesh size cages were used compared with the smaller-mesh size cages, but mortality by microbial pathogens did not differ with cage type. The high biocontrol activity indicates the resilience of the soil food web in urban ecosystems and the differential effects of habitat structure on biocontrol activity can help guide landscape planning and vegetation management to enhance urban environments and boost local self-reliance.  相似文献

In the antCamponotus vagus, when selected foragers that had been earlier removed from the foraging arena and brood-tenders that had been earlier removed from the nest were placed together in a foraging arena, most of the brood-tenders and only a few of the selected foragers were carried back to the nest by nonselected foragers. We hypothesize that cuticular hydrocarbons serve as a cue that allows foragers to discriminate between members of their own subcaste and brood-tenders. It has been established that the proportions of certain hydrocarbons, which are the same regardless of the colony studied, vary from one worker subcaste to another and thus constitute a specific chemical signature. These hydrocarbons belong to a wide range of chemical families (alkanes, monomethylalkanes, and dimethylalkanes). The greatest differences between the two subcastes were observed on the thorax of workers. Principal component analyses performed on the hydrocarbons (or hydrocarbon combinations) corresponding to the 45 main peaks in the cuticular profiles of the head and thorax of brood-tenders and foragers of several colonies show that there exist quantitative differences between the various signatures that characterize the colony, the worker subcastes, and the various body parts within the same species, which can be classified in a hierarchy where the differences between worker subcastes are less pronounced than those between body parts or between colonies.  相似文献

Cuticular hydrocarbons are used by some ants to discriminate nestmates from nonnestmates. Every member of the colony bears the same pattern because they are continuously exchanged among nestmates. The postpharyngeal gland (PPG) stores the blend of hydrocarbons and is involved in the distribution of this common mixture. However, some individuals might display individual information on the cuticle (such as a chemical signal of fertility) that must not be mixed within the common pool. We investigated how this paradox is solved in the ant Pachycondyla goeldii by analyzing the nature and localization of colonial and fertility signals. Workers in a queenless condition showed a dominance hierarchy that was correlated with ovarian development. Hydrocarbons from the cuticle and the PPG analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and identified by GC-mass spectrometry showed a clear discrimination among colonies, supporting the involvement of the PPG in the colonial identity signal. We identified and selected 11 cuticular hydrocarbons that permitted us to discriminate ovarian development classes and that might function as a fertility signal. They allowed clear colony discrimination as well, which suggests that the two signals (the individual signal of fertility and the common signal of colony identity) can be conveyed by the same compounds. However, the hydrocarbons in the PPG did not discriminate among ovarian developmental classes, suggesting that the portion of variation in the cuticular hydrocarbons constituting the fertility signal is superimposed on the signal of colony identity.  相似文献

In ca. 150 species of queenless ants, a specialized queen caste is rare or absent, and mated workers take over the role of the queen in some or all of the colonies. Previously, it has been shown that reproduction in queenless ants is regulated by a combination of dominance behavior and chemical fertility signaling. It is unknown, however, whether chemical signals alone can sufficiently regulate reproduction. To investigate this possibility, we studied reproductive regulation in the facultatively queenless ant Gnamptogenys striatula, a species where dominance behavior is rare or absent. Active egg layers and infertile workers showed qualitative and quantitative differences in their cuticular hydrocarbon profile. Five long-chain methyl alkanes, 3,13- and 3,15-dimethyl pentriacontane, 3,13- and 3,15-dimethyl heptentriacontane, and 3,11,15-trimethyl heptentriacontane occurred only on the cuticles of virgin and mated egg layers. Pronounced quantitative differences were found in a further 27 alkenes; alkanes; and mono-, di-, and trimethyl alkanes. Workers that had recently stopped laying eggs had profiles similar to infertile workers, and mating status did not affect this chemical pattern. We conclude that the cuticular hydrocarbon profiles of G. striatula workers provide reliable information about their current fertility. In the interest of colony productivity, this allows reproduction to be regulated without the use of aggression.  相似文献

Insect cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) were probed by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometry with a lithium 2,5-dihydroxybenzoate matrix. CHC profiles were obtained for 12 species of diverse insect taxa (termites, ants, a cockroach, and a flesh fly). MALDI spectra revealed the presence of high molecular weight CHCs on the insect cuticle. Hydrocarbons with more than 70 carbon atoms, both saturated and unsaturated, were detected. When compared with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS), MALDI-TOF covered a wider range of CHCs and enabled CHCs of considerably higher molecular weight to be detected. Good congruity between GC/MS and MALDI-TOF was observed in the overlapping region of molecular weights. Moreover, a number of previously undiscovered hydrocarbons were detected in the high mass range beyond the analytical capabilities of current GC/MS instruments. MALDI was shown to hold potential to become an alternative analytical method for insect CHC analyses. The ability of MALDI to discriminate among species varying in the degree of their relatedness was found to be similar to GC/MS. However, neither MALDI-MS nor GC/MS data were able to describe the phylogenetic relationships.  相似文献

The alkaloidal venom components of two species of thief ants,Solenopsis (Diplorhoptrum) species AA andS. (Diplorhoptrum)conjurata have been found to contain (5Z,9Z)-3-hexyl-5-methylindolizidine and a mixture of (5Z,9Z)-3-ethyl-5-methylindolizidine andcis-2-methyl-6-nonyl-piperidine,trans-2-methyl-6-nonylpiperidine,cis-2-methyl-6-undecylpiperidine, and hexadecanoic acid.Monomorium pharaonis was similarly investigated and found to contain the indolizidine and pyrrolidines previously described (Ritter et al., 1977b). Both indolizidines were synthesized along with their stereoisomers and separated by preparative gas chromatography. Spectral studies revealed the stereochemistry to be 5Z,9Z in both cases. The stereochemistry of 2-butyl-5-pentylpyrrolidine inM. phaeronis has also been established. Biosynthetic relationships are discussed.  相似文献

Bufonid toads of the genus Melanophryniscus represent one of several lineages of anurans with the ability to sequester alkaloids from dietary arthropods for chemical defense. The alkaloid profile for Melanophryniscus stelzneri from a location in the province of Córdoba, Argentina, changed significantly over a 10-year period, probably indicating changes in availability of alkaloid-containing arthropods. A total of 29 alkaloids were identified in two collections of this population. Eight alkaloids were identified in M. stelzneri from another location in the province of Córdoba. The alkaloid profiles of Melanophryniscus rubriventris collected from four locations in the provinces of Salta and Jujuy, Argentina, contained 44 compounds and differed considerably between locations. Furthermore, alkaloid profiles of M. stelzneri and M. rubriventris strongly differed, probably reflecting differences in the ecosystem and hence in availability of alkaloid-containing arthropods.  相似文献

We analyzed the behavioral responses of the ants Camponotus rufipes and Solenopsis geminata towards all instars of Dione junio and Abananote hylonome. We also analyzed ant behavior towards hexane extracts of larvae and extracts of the spines and neck glands of the fifth instars of both species and identified the chemical compounds present. Larvae of both species were repellent to ants from the first instar onward. Later instars survived ant attacks better than earlier instars. The spines and neck glands of the larvae influenced the behavior of C. rufipes. The chemical compounds contained in the hexane extracts of whole first and fifth instars and in the spines and neck glands of fifth instars were principally carboxylic acids and terpenes. Further bioassays confirmed the repellent effect of some of these acids toward ants.  相似文献
