Upgrading Computational Design

Shajay Bhooshan heads up the computation and design ZHACODE group at Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) and is a course master at the Architectural Association Design Research Laboratory (AADRL). Here he argues that Parametricism 2.0 has a vital role to play in the progressing of computational design. Assimilating the exploratory developments of the last 15 years, he asserts how the next phase of Parametricism will enable a further consolidation and evolution of digital practices.

Simulation and the Future of Design Tools for Ecological Research

In sustainable terms, the complexity and inefficiencies of buildings present the most challenging environmental problem. Simulation remains the primary tool for the designer to develop intuitions and analysis of performance. A High-Performance Operational Amplifier for High-Speed High-Accuracy Switch-Capacitor Cells

A highspeed highaccuracy fully differenttial operational amplifier (opamp) is realized based on noMillercapacitor feedforward (NMCF) compensation scheme. In order to achieve a good phase margin, the NMCF compensation scheme uses the positive phase shift of lefthalfplane (LHP) zero caused by the feedforward path to counteract the negative phase shift of the nondominant pole. Compared to traditional Miller compensation method, the opamp obtains high gain and wide band synchronously without the polesplitting effect while saves significant chip area due to the absence of the Miller capacitor. Simulated by the 0.35 μm CMOS RF technology, the result shows that the openloop gain of the opamp is 118 dB with the unity gainbandwidth (UGBW)of 1 GHz, and the phase margin is 61°while the settling time is 5.8 ns when achieving 0.01% accuracy. The opamp is especially suitable for the frontend sample/hold (S/H)cell and the multiplying D/A converter(MDAC) module of the highspeed highresolution pipelined A/D converters(ADCs).     

Review of "Social Cognition: The Ontario Symposium."

Reviews the book, Social Cognition: The Ontario Symposium edited by E. Tory Higgins, C. Peter Herman and Mark P. Zanna (1981). This volume presents the papers from the first Ontario Symposium on Personality and Social Psychology which was held at the University of Western Ontario in 1978. The first five chapters deal with cognitive organization. Chapter 3 provides a broad overview of schemas and their functions and liabilities which is particularly good for the reader who is fairly naive to cognitive psychology. Chapter 2 overlaps with it quite a bit, but is narrower in scope - focusing only on the issue of the relationship of information relevance and congruence to schema memory. Chapter I presents a review of the literature and a series of experiments on cognitive clustering. Chapters 4 and 5 are more conceptual in nature, dealing with respectively, the manner in which schemas govern the encoding and retention of social information and a storage bin model of category accesibility. The second part of the book, chapters 6-11, focuses on specific aspects of cognitive mechanisms, processes and biases. Some of the chapters, such as those on the use of confirmatory strategies in interpersonal hypothesis testing, self-centered biases, and nonverbal behaviour in impression management, are summaries of the authors' own line of research.
