Abstract

Plutonium metal and oxide are typically handled and processed in isolated enclosures (gloveboxes) and then transferred to storage packing systems. The United States Department of Energy (DOE) outlines general requirements relevant to the planned DOE activities to stabilise and package plutonium materials in containers, and place them in long term storage. Inner and outer containers have been qualified as the primary barrier to the environment during storage of the plutonium materials. The design and fabrication of the containers are consistent across the DOE complex. The flowform manufacturing process has been used for over 20 years to fabricate the weld free, precise containers for several DOE sites meeting ASME section III code, subsection NCA-3851.2 (a)(1).  相似文献

Abstract

Croft Associates Ltd (Croft) was contracted by the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA), Winfrith in 2006 to design, manufacture, test and license an intermediate level waste industrial package transport packaging (UKAEA 2 m Box Design no. 3954) for decommissioning waste from the Dragon and steam generating heavy water reactors at Winfrith. The package had to meet the requirements of the existing UK. Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) (Nirex) 2 m Box specification. The UKAEA 2 m Box is intended for on-site storage at Winfrith and possibly another site for 50 years and subsequent transport to the NDA repository without further processing. The design of the box closure includes a leak testable sealing system which is capable of being replaced at a later date (e.g. before shipment), by the removal of the lid and replacement of seals remote from the box location. Initially the specification for the UKAEA 2 m Box called for rating for gross weight of 40 t, but this was raised to 50 t as it was realised that the efficient use of the capacity of the box would result in a 50 t gross weight. Two prototype 2 m Boxes were produced; one being provided with 100 mm of concrete shielding, and the other being provided without any shielding. The shielded box was filled with simulated waste and a concrete grout cap fitted and the resulting 50 t package was dropped onto the massive target at Winfrith from a height of 300 mm (this being the regulatory test height). The test showed that the box performed as expected; meeting all requirements. In particular: there was no loss of shielding and no effect on the containment system that would reduce its effectiveness.  相似文献

Abstract

Dynamic Young's modulus (E d) of selected tropical wood species, namely Dyera polyphylla, Endospermum diadenum, Cratoxylum arborecens, Alstonia pneumatophora, Macaranga gigantea and Commersonia bartramia, used for the study was measured using the free–free flexural vibration method. Young's modulus from three point bending (E 3pb) and compression parallel to grain (E cp) was also studied. The results show that the relationship between E d and E 3pb for all wood species is very significant with the mean value of E d consistently larger than or sometime equal to E 3pb. Surprisingly, the relationship between E d and E cp is not significant except for Alstonia pneumatophora. The dynamic mechanical thermal properties were also investigated using the dynamic mechanical thermal analyser (DMTA). The results showed that the storage modulus of the wood species at –90°C is in the range of 1·48–4·09 GPa with a glass transition temperature ranging from 50 to 70°C.  相似文献

A new epoxy/episulfide thermosetting resin was evaluated, using a dicyandiamide (DICY) curing agent. The system was found to exhibit a longer pot life and prepreg storage life than the standard epoxy system. The properties are attributable to the change in reaction mechanism caused by the addition of episulfide. The reaction mechanisms were studied using a mono-functional model compound system; the extent of episulfide-amine reaction is relatively high in the epoxy/episulfide system relative to epoxy-amine. A tert-amine salt is probably formed which does not act as a catalyst for the epoxy ring opening, resulting in a greater pot life.  相似文献

Abstract

In 2001 the Swiss nuclear utilities started to store spent fuel in dry metallic dual purpose casks at ZWILAG, the Swiss interim storage facility. BKW FMB Energy Ltd, as the owner of the Mühleberg nuclear power plant, is involved in this process and has selected to store the spent fuel in a new high capacity dual purpose cask, the TN24BH. For the transport Cogema Logistics has developed a new medium size cask, the TN9/4, to replace the NTL9 cask, which has performed numerous shipments of BWR spent fuel in past decades. Licensed by the IAEA 1996, the TN9/4 is a 40 t transport cask, for seven BWR high burnup spent fuel assemblies. The spent fuel assemblies can be transferred to the ZWILAG hot cell in the TN24BH cask. These casks were first used in 2003. Ten TN9/4 shipments were made, and one TN24BH was loaded. After a brief presentation of the operational aspects, the paper will focus on the TN24BH high capacity dual purpose cask and the TN9/4 transport cask and describe in detail their characteristics and possibilities.  相似文献

Abstract

The treatment of used nuclear fuel, performed at AREVA's La Hague plant, allows recovering uranium 95% and plutonium 1% for recycling, the remaining 4% being considered as ultimate waste that can be sorted into two categories: high level activity waste (HLW) which is vitrified, and long-lived intermediate level waste (ILW) composed of structural elements of used nuclear fuel which is compacted. Whether vitrified or compacted, the waste is conditioned in the same universal and multipurpose container, named the Universal Canister. The resulting residue is named CSD-V for vitrified waste and CSD-C for compacted waste; they both remain property of the utilities and must be returned to countries of origin. In order to transport Universal Canisters in the best technical and economical conditions, TN International designs two kinds of cask solutions for its customers, either for transport only or for dual purpose, storage and transport, depending on the facility. Since the mid-1990s, TN International has transported CSD-V residues to Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany and Japan and is now starting the CSD-C return program. The purpose of this paper is to explain how the experience gained during the CSD-V return program has been used to optimize the CSD-C return program, in terms of cask design and licensing and of transport logistics. In some cases, casks initially developed for CSD-V transports have been adapted and in other cases, new casks are being designed specifically for CSD-C transport to increase the cask capacity and reduce the number of shipments.  相似文献

Abstract

Internal friction and shear modulus measurements were carried out in a Ti32Zr18Ni50 alloy to study the effect of martensitic transformation on hydrogenation properties. The temperatures of martensitic transformation and austenitic transformation weredetermined. The results were compared to those obtained by electrical resistivity and differential scanning calorimetry techniques. The experiments showed two peaks of internal friction, one associated withdislocation relaxations and the other with phase transformations. The microstructurecharacterisation was carried out by scanning electron microscopy. The phase (Ti, Zr)2Ni was found mainly precipitated in grain boundaries. Some experiments were carried out in specimens with previous plastic strain and another set of samples was tested in a hydrogen atmosphere. With increasing plastic strain, the amplitude of the peak associated with dislocations decreased. Hydrogen addition during the testsled to an increase in the temperature of maximum internal friction.  相似文献

The BIOPHILE Individual Vial Retriever (IVR) system has been developed to provide automated access to vials stored at ultra-low temperatures. The IVR performs storage, retrieval, sorting, cataloging, volume estimation (weighing), barcode reading, and re-racking. All racking operations are performed in an environment designed to keep samples frozen at their optimal temperature. Operating temperatures are −80°C, −40°C, −20°C, and room temperature. Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) integration, automation integration, chain of custody tracking, and FDA 21CFR Part 11 compliance are supported. This article introduces the IVR and provides information on its characteristics.  相似文献

We introduce an affective image recoloring method for changing the overall mood in the image in a numerically measurable way. Given a semantically segmented source image and a target emotion, our system finds reference image segments from the collection of images that have been tagged via crowdsourcing with numerically measured emotion labels. We then recolorize the source segments using colors from the selected target segments while preserving the gradient of the source image to generate a seamless and natural result. User study confirms the effectiveness of our method in accomplishing the stated goal of altering the mood of the image to match the target emotion level.  相似文献

Abstract

Approval is required under the transport regulations for a wide range of package designs and operations, and applications for competent authority approval and validation are received from many sources, both in the UK and overseas. To assist package designers and applicants for approval, and to promote consistency in applications and their assessment, the UK Department for Transport issues guidance on the interpretation of the transport regulations and the requirements of an application for approval and its supporting safety case. The general guidance document, known as the Guide to an Application for UK Competent Authority Approval of Radioactive Material in Transport, has been issued for many years and updated to encompass the provisions of each successive edition of the IAEA transport regulations. The guide has been referred to in a number of international fora, including PATRAM, and was cited as a 'good practice' in the report of the IAEA TRANSAS appraisal of the UK in 2002. Specialist guides include the Guide to the Suitability of Elastomeric Seal Materials, and the Guide to the Approval of Freight Containers as Types IP-2 and IP-3 Packages. This paper discusses the guidance material and summarises the administrative and technical information required in support of applications for approval of package designs, special form and low-dispersible radioactive materials, shipments, special arrangements, modifications and validations.  相似文献
