Pupils' recall of an interactive storybook on CD-ROM   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Abstract This small-scale study compares two groups of Year 4 (8/9 year-old) pupils either reading or playing an interactive storybook . The study considered pupils' recall of propositions, which formed the story setting and episodes, and of micro-propositions and characters' names, and pupils' responses to inferential items derived from the 'interactive storybook'. The study indicates that, whether reading or playing, pupils' recall of the story setting was sound, but pupils who had read the interactive storybook demonstrated greater recall of the story event structure than those who had engaged in interactive picture-play. Pupils who had played the interactive storybook demonstrated significantly greater recall of micro-propositions and names.  相似文献

The Dictionary of Old English computing systems have provided access since the 1970s to a database of approximately three million running words. These systems, designed for a variety of machines and written in a variety of languages, have until recently been planned with computing center billing algorithms in mind. With personal workstations emphasis has shifted to building more elegant user interfaces and to providing the entire DOE database to editors around the world. While the shift from sequential files to random access files and the provision of extensive development tools have changed some of the design process, error checking and protection of the database against accidental intrusion have remained as central issues.Richard L. Venezky is Unidel Professor of Educational Studies and professor of Computer and Information Sciences at the University of Delaware. He was formerly professor and chair of Computer Sciences at the University of Wisconsin. His research interests include writing systems, literacy, knowledge representation, and computer-assisted instruction. Among his recent publications are The Subtle Danger: Reflections on the Literacy Abilities of America's Young Adults (Princeton, NJ: ETS, 1987), and Steps Towards a Modern History of American Reading Instruction (Review of Research in Education, 1986, vol. 13, 129–70).  相似文献

The effect of reading an electronic storybook (e-book) on Israeli children’s language and literacy was examined in kindergarten children (= 40; age 5:2–6:3) compared to first graders (= 50; age 6:3–7:4). The children in each age group were randomly assigned to two groups: an intervention group which read the e-book five times and a control group which was afforded the regular school program. Pre- and post-tests included vocabulary and word reading measures. Post-tests included story comprehension and production. Children who read the e-book exhibited significant progress in word meaning and word reading compared to the control group. Kindergarten children progressed in word reading more significantly than first graders across treatment groups. This could be explained by the ceiling effect of the first graders’ word reading level which did not leave much room for progress in this skill compared to the kindergarten children. No interaction was found between age and treatment groups. Kindergarten children exhibited a good level of story comprehension, similar to first graders, although their story production was lower. Implications for future research and education are discussed.  相似文献

介绍了一种可扩展性强、性能和成本可控的模块式CD镜像服务器的实现原理,解决了基于Linux的服务器专有操作系统中中文支持不好的问题。通过网络访问的方式对模块式CD镜像服务器的性能进行了评测。评测结果显示,对该服务器的数据访问速度大大高于对共享光驱中数据的访问速度。尤其是在多客户访问的情况下,该服务器可提供远远高于普通共享光驱的数据访问带宽。  相似文献

The Research Associateship program of the Joint Committee on Powder Diffraction-International Centre for Diffraction Data (JCPDS-ICDD, now known as the ICDD) at NBS/NIST was a long standing (over 35 years) successful industry-government cooperation. The main mission of the Associateship was to publish high quality x-ray reference patterns to be included in the Powder Diffraction File (PDF). The PDF is a continuing compilation of patterns gathered from many sources, compiled and published by the ICDD. As a result of this collaboration, more than 1500 high quality powder diffraction patterns, which have had a significant impact on the scientific community, were reported. In addition, various research collaborations with NBS/NIST also led to the development of several standard reference materials (SRMs) for instrument calibration and quantitative analyses, and computer software for data collection, calibration, reduction, for the editorial process of powder pattern publication, analysis of powder data, and for quantitative analyses. This article summarizes information concerning the JCPDS-ICDD organization, the Powder Diffraction File (PDF), history and accomplishments of the JCPDS-ICDD Research Associateship.  相似文献

Abstract This paper reports on an experiment in which a whole semester course in psychology was replaced by a mixed formula consisting of a CD-ROM complemented by a series of seminars and workshops. The CD-ROM was conceived as a collection of documents (hypertexts, research data, references, videos and activities) linked together with genuine Netscape facilities. Students were invited to search through these documents for information to answer questions (called challenges ) on the topic. A multiple-choice questionnaire accompanied each challenge in order to foster students' self-evaluation. The seminars, held every other week, served both as forums to discuss each of the topics under the guidance of an expert. Careful analysis of students' answers to two questionnaires at the beginning and end of the course and during interviews, showed that such a formula was favourably accepted by a large majority of students, although it lead to more anxiety and work load than a traditional course. Positive effects were also observed on learning.  相似文献
