Accomplishing the layered modular architecture in digital innovation: The case of the car’s driver information module

Architectural theory of digital innovation contends that, to enhance physical products with digital capabilities, a layered modular architecture is required. This architecture hybridizes hierarchically arranged components of physical products with modules of digital functionality configured into layers. Despite considerable research adopting this architectural perspective on digital innovation, questions of how this hybrid architecture is accomplished organizationally and technologically lack both conceptual clarity and empirical illustration. Noting pervasive tensions that characterize digital innovation efforts and the contradictions between hierarchical and layered modular configurations, this paper seeks to answer the following research question: Given that the layered modular architecture needs to hybridize modular arrangements with opposing logics, how is it accomplished?Employing the concepts of digitalization, physical product hierarchy and digital control system to better theorize a product architecture’s movement from a modular to a layered modular architecture accompanied by organizational structures that enable this change, we abductively analyze the increasing digitization of a car’s Driver Information Module (DIM) over a 10 year period. We conclude by proposing three transformations through which the layered modular architecture is accomplished.

Artificial cognitive control system based on the shared circuits model of sociocognitive capacities. A first approach

A first approach for designing and implementing an artificial cognitive control system based on the shared circuit models is presented in this work. The shared circuits model approach of sociocognitive capacities recently proposed by Hurley in The shared circuits model (SCM): how control, mirroring, and simulation can enable imitation, deliberation, and mindreading. Behavioral and Brain Sciences 31(1) (2008) 1-22 is enriched and improved in this work. A five-layer computational architecture for designing artificial cognitive control systems is proposed on the basis of a modified shared circuits model for emulating sociocognitive experiences such as imitation, deliberation, and mindreading. In order to show the enormous potential of this approach, a simplified implementation is applied to a case study. An artificial cognitive control system is applied for controlling force in a manufacturing process that demonstrates the suitability of the suggested approach.     

Mirror adaptive random testing

Recently, adaptive random testing (ART) has been introduced to improve the fault-detection effectiveness of random testing for non-point types of failure patterns. However, ART requires additional computations to ensure an even spread of test cases, which may render ART less cost-effective than random testing. This paper presents a new technique, namely mirror ART, to reduce these computations. It is an integration of the technique of mirroring and ART. Our simulation results clearly show that mirror ART does improve the cost-effectiveness of ART.
