INTERNET APPLICATIONS IN ELECTRICITY MARKETS

Information requirements for secure and reliable operations of power systems in the new market environment are first outlined, followed by a brief clarification on several key characteristics and functions required for the information system. It is stated that the Internet provides an ideal solution for this purpose. Then, several issues associated with the Internet are introduced with special emphasis on Internet performance and security. Next, current Internet applications in electricity markets are briefly summarized, and a new breed of Web applications, i.e. Web service, is introduced with emphasis on the advances in Web service platforms and their possible influences on future Internet applications in electricity markets. Finally, the application service provider (ASP) model is introduced and a prospect on its future wide applications in electricity markets is made.
