A study of surface wearing ability in relation to some technological factors I. Test method and the effect of the direction of surface finishing

Two methods for the evaluation of the ability of a finished steel surface to wear a standard specimen are given, one in a differential form and the other in finite increments. It is shown that under certain conditions both approaches give similar results. The influence of the direction of finishing in grinding and turning on surface wearing ability is considered. As well as inherent roughness measured perpendicular to the finishing direction (centre-line average value) finishing defects which are not registered by the measuring apparatus influence the wearing ability of the surface.
