Study on Changes of Eco-efficiency in China’s Urbanization Process

Based on super efficiency DEA method with input-oriented and constant returns to scale, the regional eco-efficiency from 2003-2009 are estimated through EMS1.3.0. Empirical tests with the establishment of eco-efficiency mode, the eco-efficiency trends and influential factors in China’s urbanization are being tested. The results show that there is a positive U-shaped relationship between the urbanization level and eco-efficiency changes. In the early stages of urbanization, eco-efficiency continues to be lower, but with the development of urbanization, the value of eco-efficiency will keep rising. In general, the higher industrial proportion is, the lower the value of eco-efficiency will be, but the eco-efficiency can be promoted by the technological advances and environmental investment. Considering the lower eco-efficiency in China’s current rapid urbanization, a green urbanization road with low consumption, low emission should be taken in future.
