EDGING FORWARD: RECENT WORKS OF ARCHITECTURE IN SOUTH AFRICA

This text reviews a selection of architectural projects produced across South Africa in the period 1994 to 2004. The review begins with the ethical question of the relevance of the profession of architecture to the changing political and social climate in the so-called 'New South Africa'. It then examines approximately 25 current architectural works from across the country in terms of the way they are designed and the way the projects were procured and built, to construct an argument that all of these works are in their own and different way relevant to both wider society and the local and international debate on architecture. The text posits the argument that architectural production should be interrogated as cultural production and that the process of making architecture relevant to this society at this time is an important part of the process of 'Nation Building'.
