Abstract:In this paper, a method for calculating load flow of power systems containing UPFCs using conventional load flow program is proposed. The method models the UPFC according to its general control strategy, i.e. maintaining the bus voltage constant and power flow of the line constant. Under the assumption that the UPFC is lossless, the control function of maintaining the bus voltage constant can be treated as a PV bus, and the control function of maintaining the power flow of the line constant can be treated as a PQ bus, thus, the load flow problem of power systems containing UPFCs can be solved with conventional load flow program. When the load flow calculation is completed, the state variables of the UPFC can be easily found according to the load flow result.
