Abstract: | As a reaction to the article by D. M. Tokar, J. R. Withrow, R. J. Hall, and B. Moradi (see record 2002-08430-002), this commentary discusses the most pressing methodological and theoretical challenges embedded in the study of family relationship factors in the career decision making of college students. A number of the outstanding theoretical and empirical issues characteristic of structural equation modeling are reviewed, with a focus on the dilemmas that emerged in the Tokar et al. study. The use of a measure of vocational self-concept crystallization as a mediational variable is also assessed. A more expansive look at these issues culminates in a broader analysis of how modem and postmodern approaches to psychological research could be used to generate the needed knowledge on how relationships and work are interrelated.
