Abstract:
The stability of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in frozen mussel tissue (stored at -80 °C and -120 °C was assessed by analyzing samples of SRM 1974 and SRM 1974a, Organics in Mussel Tissue (Mytilus edulis), since the initial certification analyses. Results of analyses of SRM 1974 and SRM 1974a after 10 years and 6 years of storage, respectively, indicate that the PAH concentrations have not changed. Comparison of results from the analyses of frozen versus freeze-dried mussel tissue samples indicate significant losses of the more volatile PAH such as naphthalene and methylnaphthalenes during the freeze-drying process.
