Abstract: | The segregation of MgO solute at grain boundaries in Al2O3 controls the grain-growth kinetics during sintering. In the initial stages of sintering where grain growth can be neglected, the MgO solute causes a decreased sintering rate by reducing the surface energy and/or the diffusion coefficient of the rate-determining species. During the later stages of sintering, the segregated solute decreases the grain-growth rate which dominates the sintering kinetics. |
