Cohesive and Coherent Phrases and Reading Comprehension

Many studies have shown that the factors affecting reading comprehension are manifold. They include the reader's general knowledge schema and language schemata by which readers combine their own background knowledge and their language knowledge with the information in a text to comprehend that text. This paper summarizes some of the research into the types of cohesive and coherent phrases which comprise an essential part of a reader's language schemata and proposes that schema of this kind can be applied as a means to facilitate ESL reading.The authors also highlight some of the limitations of the use of this language schema-theoretic approach and point out the importance of developing the learner's vocabulary and general reading skills,of cultivating the learner's analytical ability,and of encouraging extensive reading.
