Abstract: | The open circuit reduction of chemisorbed oxygen on a platinum electrode in the presence of a dissolved depolarizer, such as formic acid, is shown to proceed by a purely electrochemical mechanism. It is unnecessary to invoke an initial purely chemical reduction. The concept of such a reduction is not supported by the measured rate of reaction. |
