Abstract:Abstract

By observing the angular dependence of the reflectivity of a ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) cell fabricated from glass pyramids with 60° evaporated SiO aligning layers it has been possible to sensitively probe the configuration of the optical dielectric tensor in the FLC layer. It is found that the optical data can best be explained by a uniaxial slab twisted from the alignment axis; this is consistent with the recently proposed chevron structure.
