In this paper we study the decoherence process occurring when a field prepared in quantum superpositions of coherent states (Schrödinger cats) interacts with a two-level atom in the framework of the Jaynes-Cummings model. We emphasize the influence of the relative phase in the initial superposition state on the purity of the field during the evolution
