| Abstract: | The Committee on International Relations in Psychology confers the Award(s) for Distinguished Contributions to the International Advancement of Psychology to an individual(s) who has made sustained and enduring contributions to international cooperation and the advancement of knowledge of psychology. In accordance with established custom, the award winners have agreed to present addresses on some phase of their contributions to research in the international psychological field at the 1997 convention. Award addresses delivered in 1996 are published in the April 1997 American Psychologist. One of the two winners is Anthony J. Marsella. Marsella has promoted cross-cultural understanding and acceptance as a key to peace within and among nations. Marsella has conducted international research for three decades, as a Fulbright Scholar in the Philippines, a project director for a psychiatric epidemiological study in Borneo, a National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) Culture and Mental Health Fellow at the East-West Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, and a professor of psychology and director of the World Health Organization (WHO) at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. At present, in addition to holding the latter two positions, he is director of the Clinical Studies Program at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and a member of the American Psychological Association Task Force on Urban Initiatives.
