Abstract:In order to apply forces to a micro-scale object in a flexible way, a single micro-scale bubble is generated at the end of a capillary. This bubble is directly used to contact and apply force to the object. Due to the compressibility of gas, a bubble also called a gas-liquid interface deforms when it interacts with the object. A bubble can work as an actuator and apply force in a flexible manner. First, a capillary is connected to an air pump to generate a single micro-scale bubble in liquid environment, and bubble generating and controlling process is qualitatively analyzed. Subsequently, a micro-cantilever is used as a reference and let the bubble applies forces at the end of the cantilever. The bubble acting forces are estimated by the deformation of the cantilever. Experiment shows a linear relationship between a bubble's deformation and its output forces when it acts as an actuator.
