Abstract: | This paper reports on the advantages of using public key distribution as the underlying mechanism in support of cryptographic key management for a local area network. The design and development of an experimental encrypted subnetwork operating on MITRE's broadband CSMA/CD CATV cable bus local area network will be discussed. This hybrid system uses the Diffie-Hellman discrete exponential public key distribution algorithm in conjunction with the U.S. National Bureau of Standards Data Encryption Standard (DES). Its application to the privacy and authentication requirements of an office electronic mail system will be highlighted. |
