Abstract: | Because of the high neutron capture cross section for five consecutive europium isotopes, Eu2O3 is of interest as a control material for nuclear reactors. A tendency toward excessive grain growth degrades its mechanical properties. Small amounts of HfO2 and Ta2O5 were added to the Eu2O3 in attempts to suppress this grain growth.
