Behavior of concrete-filled round-ended steel tubular column under eccentric compression

Abstract:The concrete-filled round-ended steel tubular (CFRST) column has the advantages of aesthetical appearance, flexible sectional arrangement, high strength and convenient construction. It has been used in practical engineering. In order to investigate the behavior of the CFRST slender column under eccentric compression, tests of 12 CFRST columns under eccentric compression were carried out. The main parameters included eccentricity and slenderness ratio. The test results indicate that the increase of the eccentricity and slenderness ratio induce the decreasing of load-bearing capacity and the increasing of ductility. Before the peak load, the confinement effect of the round-ended steel tube on core concrete is established. After the peak load, the local buckling of the steel tube is observed. During the whole test, the mid cross-section of the CFRST column always keeps as a plane. The deflection curve of the CFRST column is close to the sinusoidal half-wave. Then, the FE model was developed. The FE results agreed well with experimental results. The parametric analysis was conducted. The results show that the stability coefficient decreases with the increase of the steel yield strength, slenderness ratio and concrete strength. The concrete strength, steel ratio, slenderness ratio and steel yield strength have great influences on the relative axial load versus relative moment curves. Finally, based on the parameter analysis, simplified models were improved to predict the load-bearing capacity of the CFRST slender column under axial and eccentric compression. The predictions by the simplified models agree well with the measured results and the FE predictions.
