Applying Landscape Ecology to Urban Planning and Analysis

This paper introduces the theoretical concepts and analytical methods of landscape ecology, and their difference from those in traditional ecology. Taking landscape ecology planning as the theoretical base, the author explores the applying methods of ecological planning at regional and landscape scales. The operational methods include historical- and palaeo-landscape ecology, analysis of ecologically strategic points, ecologically land use pattern, scenarios planning, etc. The institutional operational mechanism in urban planning may include the applications of overlay zoning, transfer development right (TDR)and the integration of greenways and guideways planning and so on. The purpose of the paper is to provide personal thinking at the operational dimension of planning for the sustainable development of cities.
