林纾与《东方杂志》

林纾是清末民初最著名的文学翻译家，同时也是一位具有代表性的古文学家。《东方杂志》是商务印书馆旗下最为重要的综合性刊物，在它的早期刊发了林纾大量的译作和诗文，成为林纾作品发表的重要阵地。但自五四新文化运动兴起之后，林纾与《东方杂志》都受到了陈独秀等激进派的严厉批判。林纾致力于译介西学，最终落得个“守旧”之名；《东方杂志》以理性之态度启导国民，介绍西学，也同样落得个不新不旧的“杂乱派”之恶名。

Linshu and the Eastern Miscellany

Linshu was the most famous literature translator in the period from late Qing dynasty to the beginning of the Republic of China, and also an ancient Chinese expert. The Eastern Miscellany was the most important comprehensive magazine of the Commercial Press, which published a number of Lin Shu＇s translation, poems and proses and was an important publishing media of Lin Shu＇s works. But since the rise of the New Cuture Movement, Lin Shu and the Eastern Miscellany were se- verely criticized by the radicals led by Chen Duxiu. Lin Shu, who commited his life to the tranlation of western literature, was branded as ＂a conservative＂. The Eastern Miscellany, which introduced the occidental learning and enlightened the people by rationality, was infamously named ＂a miscellaneous school＂.
