Abstract:A single particle impact test device was designed and manufactured by the authors. Several pure metals and low carbon steels were impacted at different velocities using this test device. The dynamic hardness of these materials was measured at different velocities. By deformation analysis of material under solid particle impact, the relations between dynamic hardness and static hardness, strain hardening rate, strain rate hardening sensitivity and other properties of material were discussed. It was shown that dynamic hardness is not a invariable property of material. It varies with impact velocities and materials tested. It was found that there was no direct relation between dynamic hardness and static hardness or other static properties of material. Dynamic hardness is a measure of the ability of material. Dynamic hardness is a measure of the ability of material to resist dynamic indentation deformation at certain strain and strain rate level. Dynamic hardness is directly proportional to the dynamic flow stress at the same strain and strain rate level. The ratio between them is about 3.8-4.2.
