Abstract:Ultra-wide-band (UWB) technology has important applications in the fields of wireless communications, radar, and sensing, etc. The UWB optical transmission system that uses low loss, high bandwidth optical fiber (UWB over fiber) is a hot topic both at home and abroad, in which one of the key technologies is the generation of UWB signal. As a result an approach which utilizes cross-gain modulation (XGM) effect of semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) and fiber Bragg grating (FBG) to optically generate UWB signal is proposed and simulated in experiment, thereby obtaining the UWB signal which is in accordance with FCC standard and has central frequency of 4. 6 GHz, and --10 dB bandwidth of 135%. Finally the problems existed in that method are analyzed.
