Abstract:The development of vertical shaft tunnel in former USSR is introduced in the paper. The paper also gives a review on the application and points out that some advantages and high economic benefit can be achieved by innovating the configurations of intake and energy dissipater. (1) The morning glory spillway in normal case is replaced by a lower, horizontal and short intake, a right-angle bend or a whirling flow case is adopted to connect to the upper part of vertical shaft, which results in a large discharge capacity and reduces the excavation. (2) The normal energy dissipater at the outlet is changed to a deep energy dissipating well or an inner energy dissipater with a whirling flow at the end of the vertical shaft, which has a higher energy dissipating efficiency and decreases the flow velocity in tunnel and thereofre, the cavitation in tunnel and bank erosion at the outlet can be prevented and the lining work can be reduced as well. Such a new kind of structure indicates a wide-ranging application of rebuilding a diversion tunnel.
