Significant Scientific and Technological Progress and Trend of Sediment Research in the Yellow River

Sediment problem of the Yellow River is one of the key problems of harnessing the Yellow River. Generation after generation of researchers have done a lot of researches on this topic, and achieved fruitful results, which have been directly applied to guided the Yellow River control project, and also made great contributions to the development of the sediment discipline. In the past decade, with the progress of science and technology and the development of social economy, the state has proposed higher requirements for the Yellow River control work, and sediment research in the Yellow River has entered a rapid development stage, especially in quantitative and theoretical research. In this paper, the major scientific and technological progress of the Yellow River sediment research is briefly introduced from the aspects of the change of water and sediment regime, the basic theory of water and sediment movement in the Yellow River, the theory and technology of water and sediment regulation and control in the Yellow River, the evolution of river bed and the regulation of river channel, the comprehensive treatment and utilization of sediment and so on, the development trend of sediment research in the Yellow River were summarized, and during the period of "Yellow River basin ecological protection and high-quality development", under the guidance of the major national strategy, the major scientific issues should be focused in future were also proposed.
