BOUNDARY LAYER EFFECTS ON SOLID PARTICLE MOTION AND EROSIVE WEAR
Abstract:The Lagrangian equation of motion of a solid particle suspended in two- dimensional (2-D) turbulent boundary layer flows, taking into account the effects of the Saffman lift force, the Basset force, the virtual mass force and the additional drag force created by the wall presence, is modified. The effects of a boundary layer on particle motion including the particle velocity and angle as well as the impact erosive wear by the solid particle are studied. The minimum (critical) dimensionless incidence velocities and angles to the wall from the edge of a 2-D incompressible turbulent boundary layer are presented for various dimensionless particle sizes and initial velocities. These results clearly show, the effects of the boundary layer on particle (especially the smaller solid particle size) motion and the particle impact erosive wear are very great, the presence of the boundary layer always decreases particle impact velocity and the impact erosive wear.
