Abstract: | Contact Allergy against Preservatives in Ointments and Creams According to clinical experience, the bacteriostatic and fungistatic preservatives, in external application ointments, often cause exzema or allergic contact reactions. On the basis of test results, the frequency and character of the side reactions due to p-dihydroxybenzoic acid ester and sorbic acid as well as those due to cetylpyridinchloride and formaldehyde are reported. To avoid as far as possible the harms due to preservatives in the compositions prescribed by the physicians, as well as in cosmetics, very little or no use of allergy producing preservatives and above all their declaration on the package is required. |
