Cognitive Interpretation of English Transferred Epithet from the Perspectives of Metaphor and Metonymy

In transferred epithet, the transferred modifier and the center word are logically contradic- tory on the surface but they make a perfect match in terms of deep structure. To generate and under- stand such language forms, one needs to apply thinking patterns based on similarity and proximity. Metaphor and metonymy, generally recognized as two basic cognitive means, can shed light on how the transferred attributes can go with the center word which they don＇ t belong to and play an impor- tant role in interpreting the generation and comprehension of transferred epithet.
