City Competitiveness and Healthy City Development

Indicated by the urbanization rate mounting to 49.68% in 2010, China has stepped into the key period of city constrction. The healthy development of city has become a very important issue in further promoting urbanization and keep the economy fast developing. Reviewing the city development problems in the past, especially in lacking the international angle in city development strategy, the paper introduces the concept of urban competitiveness and discusses its role in constructing a healthy city. It points out that through this concept, the fun-tion, advantages and disadvantages of the city can be better understood by comparing with its competitors,and therefore the city can create and consolidate its develop strength, overcome or avoid the problem, attract and utilizemore resources and eventually achieve better performance. Addressing urban competitiveness, urban develop-ment can be improved from size-expansion to a quality-oriented way. Although many factors should be involved in shap-ing urban competitiveness, economic cluster is a practical approach, which is at the center of developmentin the future and deserves great attention.
