Relationship between Subband Decomposition and Subband Coding

The concept of subband is used in both subband coding and subband decomposition based on subband DFT. In this paper, their relationship is investigated and demonstrated in detail for the first time. At first, the theories of subband decomposition and subband coding are outlined respectively. Then the inherent relationship between them is established by applying two-channel perfect-reconstruction quadrature mirror filter (QMF ) through formula derivation and theoretical analysis. It is proved that the subband decomposition based on subband DFT and the subband coding utilize the same decomposition and reconstruction approach. The discussion is valuable for better understanding of the principle of subband decompostion, subband DFT and the rnergence of the two subband techniques.
