| Abstract: | The recent impressive developments in intelligent knowledge-based systems design have led inevitably to proposals to design intelligent tutoring systems along similar lines. At the core of such a tutoring system is an ‘expert system’ able to perform whatever task the learner is to master. This methodology focuses on expertise, views actual student behaviour as deviant and encourages conformance to some predetermined standard. This paper describes an alternative research strategy involving the design of ‘guided discovery learning’ systems built around machine learning programs. |
