DETERMINATION OF CELL STRUCTURAL CHARACTERISTICS OF POLYURETHANE FOAM PLASTICS

Cell structural characteristics of polyurethane foam plastics have been determined by the combination of sweep electron microscope(SEM)and optical microscope in this paper.These characteristics include some important material geometric parameters such as cell structural mophology, cell size and its distribution,ellipsoidal degree of cell and volume fraction of cell for foams of different densities.The determination of these parameters can provide not only necessary experimental data for the improvement of the quality and formulation of polyurethane foam plastics,but also necessary physical parameters for investigating the mechanical behavior polyurethane foam plastics.A kind of method to calculate the density of foam plastics has been proposed on basis of analysis of the pictures of SEM and the results from the microscope.Reasonable agreement between the theoretical prediction and the experimental results has been obtained.
