Abstract:The mechanism of failure of plasma sprayed ZrO2-NiCrAl functionally gradient thermal barrier coatings under transient thermal loads was studied using the thermoelastic finite element method and experimental methods. The surface tensile stress is determined to initiate surface cracks and tensile stress normal to the interface is large enough to break the interfacial bond in the functionally gradient thermal barrier coatings.
