Studying Progress on Hollow Projectile Technique in the Western Countries

Hollow projectiles have a series of excellent characteristics in the performance and operation,such as small resistance,high accuracy, low dispersion,superior target penetration,inexpensive manufacturing,low recoil, suitable for handing and transportation. This paper provdes an overview of the history of hollow projectile techniques is made. The points on hollow projectile techniques is presented and discussed in detail, including improving on resistance performance, using high performance sabots, enhancing damage power, adding trace performance, hollow bullet, taking for training round to match the trajectory of the armour piercing, fin stabilized, discarding sabot round, and new concept weaponry using hollow projectiles. The design parameters and performance data of the 5.56 mm, 7.62 mm, 20 mm and 105 mm hollow projectiles in practice in the western countries are summarized. At last,the developing tendency and application prospect of hollow projectile techniques are analysed.
