Treasuring the Past for an Enlightening Future An Overview of the Historic Preservation Program and Its Scope at Tongji

This article is intended to give an overview of the establishment and development of the historic preservation program and its multidisciplinary effects at Tongji University.It begins with a brief discussion upon the basic concepts within the field of historical preservation,then follows by a recounting of the ideas and teachings of those professors who were pioneers of historic preservation and first generation of faculties in CAUP,and ends by mapping out various scopes and disciplines in relation to historical preservation.In doing so,the author of this article hopes to highlight the achievements of the historical preservation program of Tongji University both in theory,education,and professional practice, pin-point the existing problems and challenges,in order to provide some possible thoughts for future development.
