The Character and Meaning of Public Space in the Traditional Villages of the Pearl River Delta--A Case Study of the Shunde Ancient Town in the Ming and Qing Dynasties

The public space in the traditional villages of the Zhujiang delta region can be divided into civic,work,and living spaces. This variety of spaces provides for the religious,commercial,and everyday needs of village residents,and expresses unique vernacular,cultural,and morphological qualities. The public space in traditional villages serves as both the physical and spiritual center of the village,important places where people gather and communicate.
