This paper offers an inclusive definition of greenway, discusses its classification, functions and related theories, reviews the history of greenway planning based on the relations of human beings and nature. Based on the reviews, this paper also presents a series generic principles for greenways planning, including scale, goal, content, network structure and landscape contexts, fulfilled the multiple and synthetic functions of greenways, eg. ecological, recreational and cultural functions.
