Can You See Me Now? Sensor Positioning for Automated and Persistent Surveillance

Most existing camera placement algorithms focus on coverage and/or visibility analysis, which ensures that the object of interest is visible in the camera's field of view (FOV). However, visibility, which is a fundamental requirement of object tracking, is insufficient for automated persistent surveillance. In such applications, a continuous consistently labeled trajectory of the same object should be maintained across different camera views. Therefore, a sufficient uniform overlap between the cameras' FOVs should be secured so that camera handoff can successfully and automatically be executed before the object of interest becomes untraceable or unidentifiable. In this paper, we propose sensor-planning methods that improve existing algorithms by adding handoff rate analysis. Observation measures are designed for various types of cameras so that the proposed sensor-planning algorithm is general and applicable to scenarios with different types of cameras. The proposed sensor-planning algorithm preserves necessary uniform overlapped FOVs between adjacent cameras for an optimal balance between coverage and handoff success rate. In addition, special considerations such as resolution and frontal-view requirements are addressed using two approaches: 1) direct constraint and 2) adaptive weights. The resulting camera placement is compared with a reference algorithm published by Erdem and Sclaroff. Significantly improved handoff success rates and frontal-view percentages are illustrated via experiments using indoor and outdoor floor plans of various scales.      

Can You Explain This？ Personality and Willingness to Commit Various Acts of Academic Misconduct

The rapid development of IT has created a problematic situation in higher education by providing individuals with a greater opportunity to engage in academic dishonesty especially in online courses, in contrast to traditional classroom courses. There are various factors that were used in research to explain the phenomenon of academic dishonesty. Among them are personality traits that were found to be effective in explaining unethical behaviors. Therefore, this study explores students＇ personality traits as predictors of academic dishonesty in the context of traditional and distance-learning courses in higher education. Data from 1,365 students enrolled in academic institutes in the U.S.A and Israel were surveyed to assess their personality and their willingness to commit various acts of academic misconduct. The findings indicate that in both countries dishonest behaviors are greater in face-to-face than in online courses. In addition, both American and Israeli students identified with the personality trait of agreeableness showed a negative correlation with academic dishonesty, Furthermore, Israeli students identified with the personality traits of conscientiousness and emotional stability demonstrated a negative correlation with academic dishonesty. In contrast, the personality trait of extraversion among American students was positively correlated with academic misconduct. Implications for further research are discussed.

However, their major problem with holism (that, if holism is true, then no two people can understand each other) can be fixed by means of negotiating meanings. Syntactic semantics and Fodor and Lepores objections to holism are outlined; the nature of communication, miscommunication, and negotiation is discussed; Bruners ideas about the negotiation of meaning are explored; and some observations on a problem for knowledge representation in AI raised by Winston are presented.
