Remembering Pearl Harbor: You don't know Jack

As dusk takes its last breath, the sun settles beneath a line of crooked pitch pine trees, guarding each side of a darkened two-lane road. With the impending darkness, whitetail deer emerge from the woods and clop across Route 530 in search of grazing areas while battalions of bloodsucking greenhead flies plunge between the scant number of vehicles on the road. The few local businesses still open at 8 o'clock in the evening?the witching hour in Whiting, New Jersey?are quiet and underpopulated, due in part to the town's high concentration of retirement communities. Welcome to the Pinelands. For the younger generation, the Pinelands, or Pine Barrens, is widely known as the birthplace of the legendary New Jersey Devil and the depository of "whacked" remains for Tony Soprano's crew. The truth is, the Pinelands has been in the munitions business long before the mafia? its 1.1 million acres were mined for bog ore that was used to construct weapons for both the American Revolution and the War of 1812. It is also the final resting place of an engineering marvel, the German airship the Hindenburg, which was engulfed by fire and crashed at Lakehurst Naval Air Station on 6 May 1937. Two years later, German aggression set World War II into motion and on 7 December 1941 with the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the United States entered the fray.

为了抑制炮控系统电动负载模拟器中存在的多余力矩,进一步提高其输出力矩的控制精确度和动态特性,对电动负载模拟器力矩输出的影响因素进行研究。首先结合电动负载模拟器系统的结构组成和工作原理,建立数学模型,得到输出力矩对应的传递函数和具体影响因素;然后依次研究电动负载模拟器系统的连接刚度、力矩电机的输入力矩、负载电机的角度、摩擦、间隙等非线性时变量对系统力矩输出的影响,并分别采用时频阈分析和谐波跟踪等方法进行性能评估;最后结合具体仿真和实验数据,分析影响力矩电机输出力矩谐波畸变的定性和定量关系,为提高电动负载模拟器控制性能提供有力的理论支撑。     

A Novel Technique for Denoising Explosive Lung Sounds Emnpirmical Mode Decompiosition and Fractal Dimension Foilter

In this paper, a novel denoising tool that enhances explosive lung sounds (ELS), such as crackles and squawks (SQs), so they can more accurately and reliably be interpreted by the physicians, has been presented. This approach combines empirical mode decomposition (EMD) with fractal dimension (FD) analysis, highlighting, simultaneously, the advantageous complementarities drawn from such bridging, through its application to experimental data. The results obtained show that this hybrid denoising scheme can achieve good discrimination between useful ELS and background noise. Finally, its adaptive performance and its low computational complexity make it applicable to other separation problems involving nonstationary transient signals contaminated by uncorrelated additive noise

A Cogeneration Overview by a Large Electric and Gas Utility

Cogeneration has become a "buzz" word in the energy industry of late and it is appropriate to review the history, benefits, penalties, and attitudes that apply to cogeneration. By cogeneration, we mean the production of industrial process steam as a by-product of electric generation (or, as industry considers it, the generation of electricity as a by-product of thermal production). The first cogeneration facilities were installed when electricity was in its infancy. Since that time, cogeneration decreased as central stations provided lower and lower cost electricity. Presently, because of increasing electric rates and oil prices there has been a renewal of interest in cogeneration. There have been large-scale instances of cooperation between electric utilities and industrial installation since the 1920's. Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G) has been successfully involved in such an arrangement since 1957 at the Linden generating station. Here electricity for the PSE&G system and process steam for the Exxon Bayway refinery are simultaneously produced. The United States and the State of New Jersey have recently passed legislation strongly encouraging cogeneration. As a result, there has been a great deal of financial and legal encouragement toward the maximum development of cogeneration.     

Evaluating operational risk in a power system with a large amount of wind power

Reserve definition is a compromise between economic issues (additional capacity costs) and reliability (risk of loss of load due to outages of the generators), generally approached by deterministic criteria (e.g. the percentage rule defined by UCTE in Europe) and probabilistic methods like PJM (Pennsylvania–New Jersey, Maryland) and its enhancements, based on the concept of risk. With wind power generation increasing in power systems worldwide, these operational issues gain a renewed interest due to the volatile nature of this kind of energy. The aim of this paper is therefore to address this issue from a risk evaluation point of view, showing that it is possible to extend classical probabilistic methods to this new situation, by introducing a detailed Markov model of wind parks that accounts both for machine failures and different wind power levels.     

IEEE Student Branch profile: To serve and connect

Service has been at the root of Rowan University in Glassboro, New Jersey, since the early 1900s. In 1917, when the state was suffering from a shortage of schools that provided training for teachers, Glassboro residents raised over US$7,000 to purchase 25 acres of land, which was offered to the state free of charge if the town was selected as the site of the planned twoyear teachers training school. That was quite a chunk of change then. Six years later, 236 young women arrived to christen the opening of Glassboro Normal School.     

New Jersey Acts on Energy and Climate Change [Living with Technology]

An unusual aspect of this conference was its focus on state-level energy and climate policies. The lack of federal leadership on these issues within the U.S.A. has opened a window of opportunity at the state level for policy entrepreneurs. California acted in 2005 with an executive order establishing greenhouse gas emission reduction targets, ratified in 2006 by the state legislature. New Jersey acted in 2007, helped along by the fact-finding, target-setting effort leading to this conference. The thoughtful discussions and careful analysis that played out during 2006 and early 2007 played a role in giving policymakers and stake holders the confidence to act decisively. Thus, by February 2007, New Jersey's governor had penned an executive order setting two greenhouse gas targets: reduce emissions to 1990 levels by 2020, and reduce emissions to 80% below current levels by 2050.     

Early development of the incandescent lamp

This paper discusses, many inventions referred to lamp development patent by Sawyer and Man conjointly and some by Sawyer separately. In July 1878, Sawyer, Man, and five other individuals formed the Electro-Dynamic Light Company. Westinghouse brought under its control practically all of the important incandescent electric lamp patents except those of the Edison company. Edison had secured a patent about lamp bulb. Upon the expiration of the Edison patent, the Westinghouse company resumed manufacture of the all-glass globe type of lamp. When the lamp business outgrew the capacity of the West 23rd Street factory, it was transferred to a new factory in Bloomfield, New Jersey.

混合式短期边际电价预测模型

提出以动态聚类和BP神经网络来预测短期边际电价，以样本数据与聚类中心的距离最小为标准，通过动态聚类方法将所有样本数据划分到多个类别中，对不同类别的样本数据分别建立具有相同拓扑结构、不同神经元连接权值和阈值的BP神经网络模型，通过BP神经网络的反向传播过程不断修正模型中的神经元连接权值和阈值，实现对短期边际电价的合理预测，以America PJM (美国宾夕法尼亚州、新泽西州和马里兰州)公布的1999年数据进行模型训练和测试，结果表明该方法所建立的预测模型具有较高的预测精度。     

Integrated biomedical engineering education using studio-based learning

Discovery-based learning in early biomedical engineering courses promotes the development of skills that are required in later courses and in professional practice. Studio learning is an alternative to the conventional lecture/recitation/laboratory format, and it is shown to encourage student inquiry and foster faculty and peer mentoring. This method also allows significant integration of foundational course materials that are essential for biomedical engineering while engaging students' interest in the field. This article discusses the application of studio-based learning to biomedical engineering using examples from New Jersey Institute of Technology's (NJIT) two introductory sophomore courses in biomedical engineering.     

Consumer willingness to pay for community solar in New Jersey

Clean energy policy and technology are important in reducing the impacts of greenhouse gases. Understanding location community solar and expected benefits is vital for successful policy optimization. We assess public preferences for community solar programs with attributes such as land-use array, proximity, reduction of fossil fuel generation, environmental quality, and energy cost savings in New Jersey. There is preference for development of community solar in commercial areas, followed by landfills, and farmlands.

Identification/prediction algorithms for armax models with relaxed positive real conditions

Extended least squares (ELS) algorithms are proposed for ARMAX model identification with the objective of avoiding the positive real condition associated with standard equation error and output error algorithms. This is achieved by an overparametrization at the cost of additional richness requirements on excitation signals, but without introducing ill-conditioning or infinite-dimensional calculations as in earlier methods. Results for the case of D-step-ahead prediction ELS algorithms for ARMAX models are also explored in the paper. Some simulation studies are included to assess the relative performance characteristics of the proposed algorithms, and the nature of the relaxed positive real condition for different degrees of overparametrization N is investigated in detail for second-order noise models.     

From Calamity Mesa to Boyertown, PA: Risk, radom, and regulation in cold war America

In the boom uranium mining industry in the American Southwest during the postwar 1940s and 1950s, the first casualty was occupational safety. That lapse engendered a harsh legacy: roughly fifty percent of the miners developed lung cancer over the next ten to twenty years, an outcome to which their excessive exposure to the decay products of radon gas emitted by the uranium ore may have contributed. Several decades later, in the mid-1980s, radon returned to the realm of public health and public policy when the high levels of radon gas found in private homes in Pennsylvania and New Jersey set off an indoor radon scare and compelled the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to set radon standards for residential environments. This paper employs these two radon exposure crises as a heuristic for examining the multiplicity of social, economic, political, and cultural concerns that are mobilized around a scientificallyinformed regulatory decision.     

Adaptive fuzzy finite-time consensus tracking for multiple Euler-Lagrange systems with unknown control directions

In this paper, the problem of adaptive fuzzy finite-time consensus tracking control for multiple Euler-Lagrange systems (ELSs) with uncertain dynamics and unknown control directions (UCDs) is investigated. The computational complexity problem in conventional backstepping is avoided by using finite-time command filter (FTCF), and the error in the filtering process is eliminated through error compensation signals. The fuzzy logic system combined with the adaptive control technique is applied to approximate and estimate the unknown nonlinear dynamics of ELS. The Nussbaum function-based continuous and nonsmooth input control torque is established to eliminate the influence of UCDs, and the proposed control scheme can guarantee the consensus tracking errors converge to the desired neighborhood of the origin within a finite time. Numerical simulation is used to test the effectiveness of the given algorithm.

传统虚拟总轴控制策略中扭矩反馈存在较大时滞,当负载发生扰动时,电机之间转速和位置同步误差会不断增大,导致产品质量下降。针对这一问题,提出了改进的双电机虚拟总轴同步控制策略。在改进策略中,为提高弹性扭矩的反馈速度,采用滑模观测器观测将观测的负载转矩直接反馈给虚拟电机;为减小电机之间的位置差,在虚拟机械单元引入积分项。仿真结果表明,改进的控制策略提高了系统应对负载突变的能力,有效减小了电机间转速和位置同步误差,具有一定的实用价值。
