Ultraviolet (UV) irradiation has become popular as a primary disinfectant because it is very effective against Cryptosporidium and does not directly form regulated disinfection by-products. Higher UV doses and UV advanced oxidation (UV/H2O2) processes are under consideration for the treatment of trace organic pollutants (e.g. pharmaceuticals, personal care products). Despite the disinfection effectiveness of UV light, a secondary disinfectant capable of maintaining a distribution system residual is required to meet current U.S. regulation. This study investigated changes in disinfection by-product (DBP) formation attributed to UV or UV/H2O2 followed by application of free chlorine to quench hydrogen peroxide and provide residual disinfectant. At a UV dose of 1000 mJ/cm2, trihalomethane (THM) yield increased by up to 4 μg/mg-C and 13 μg/mg-C when treated with low and medium pressure UV, respectively. With the addition of hydrogen peroxide, THM yield increased by up to 25 μg/mg-C (5 mg-H2O2/L) and 37 μg/mg-C (10 mg-H2O2/L). Although no changes in DBPs are expected during UV disinfection, application of UV advanced oxidation followed by chlorine addition was assessed with regard to impacts on DBP formation.  相似文献

Advanced oxidation treatment using low pressure UV light coupled with hydrogen peroxide (UV/H2O2) was evaluated for the oxidation of six pharmaceuticals in three wastewater effluents. The removal of these six pharmaceuticals (meprobamate, carbamazepine, dilantin, atenolol, primidone and trimethoprim) varied between no observed removal and >90%. The role of the water quality (i.e., alkalinity, nitrite, and specifically effluent organic matter (EfOM)) on hydroxyl radical (OH) exposure was evaluated and used to explain the differences in pharmaceutical removal between the three wastewaters. Results indicated that the efficacy of UV/H2O2 treatment for the removal of pharmaceuticals from wastewater was a function of not only the concentration of EfOM but also its inherent reactivity towards OH. The removal of pharmaceuticals also correlated with reductions in ultraviolet absorbance at 254 nm (UV254), which offers utilities a surrogate to assess pharmaceutical removal efficiency during UV/H2O2 treatment.  相似文献

This study examined the impact of UV, ozone (O3), advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) including O3/UV, H2O2/UV H2O2/O3 in the change of molecular weight distribution (MWD) and disinfection by-product formation potential (DBPFP). Bench-scale experiments were conducted with surface river water and changes in the UV absorbance at 254 nm (UV254), total organic carbon (TOC), trihalomethane and haloacetic acid formation potential (THMFP, HAAFP) and MWD of the raw and oxidized water were analyzed to evaluate treatment performance. Combination of O3 and UV with H2O2 was found to result in more TOC and UV254 reduction than the individual processes. The O3/UV process was found to be the most effective AOP for NOM reduction, with TOC and UV254 reduced by 31 and 88%, respectively. Application of O3/UV and H2O2/UV treatments to the source waters organics with 190-1500 Da molecular weight resulted in the near complete alteration of the molecular weight of NOM from >900 Da to <300 Da H2O2/UV was found to be the most effective treatment for the reduction of THM and HAA formation under uniform formation conditions. These results could hold particular significance for drinking water utilities with low alkalinity source waters that are investigating AOPs, as there are limited published studies that have evaluated the treatment efficacy of five different oxidation processes in parallel.  相似文献

Removal of bromide and natural organic matter by anion exchange   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Bromide removal by anion exchange was explored for various water qualities, process configurations, and resin characteristics. Simulated natural waters containing different amounts of natural organic matter (NOM), bicarbonate, chloride, and bromide were treated with a polyacrylate-based magnetic ion exchange (MIEX) resin on a batch basis to evaluate the effectiveness of the resin for removal of bromide. While bromide removal was achieved to some degree, alkalinity (bicarbonate), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and chloride were shown to inhibit bromide removal in waters with bromide concentrations of 100 and 300 μg/L. Water was also treated using a two-stage batch MIEX process. Two-stage treatment resulted in only a slight improvement in bromide removal compared to single-stage treatment, presumably due to competition with the high concentration of chloride which is present along with bromide in natural waters. In view of the relatively poor bromide removal results for the MIEX resin, a limited set of experiments was performed using polystyrene resins. DOC and bromide removal were compared by treating model waters with MIEX and two polystyrene resins, Ionac A-641 and Amberlite IRA910. The two polystyrene resins were seen to be more effective for bromide removal, while the MIEX resin was more effective at removing DOC.  相似文献

The occurrence of pharmaceuticals in source waters is increasing. Although UV advanced oxidation is known to be an effective barrier against micropollutants, degradation rates are only available for limited amounts of pharmaceuticals. Therefore, the degradation of a large group of pharmaceuticals has been studied in this research for the UV/H2O2 process under different conditions, including pharmaceuticals of which the degradation by UV/H2O2 was never reported before (e.g., metformin, paroxetine, pindolol, sotalol, venlafaxine, etc.). Monochromatic low pressure (LP) and polychromatic medium pressure (MP) lamps were used for three different water matrices. In order to have well defined hydraulic conditions, all experiments were conducted in a collimated beam apparatus. Degradation rates for the pharmaceuticals were determined. For those compounds used in this research that are also reported in literature, measured degradation results are in good agreement with literature data. Pharmaceutical degradation for only photolysis with LP lamps is small, which is increased by using a MP lamp. Most of the pharmaceuticals are well removed when applying both UV (either LP or MP) and H2O2. However, differences in degradation rates between pharmaceuticals can be large. For example, ketoprofen, prednisolone, pindolol are very well removed by UV/H2O2, whereas metformin, cyclophosphamide, ifosfamide are very little removed by UV/H2O2.  相似文献

Absorbance spectra of fractions of natural organic matter (NOM) with varying apparent molecular weights (AMWs) were examined in this study. Size exclusion chromatography (SEC) was employed to obtain AMW distributions for three Australian water sources which represented low- and high-dissolved organic carbon (DOC) surface waters and a source with highly degraded NOM. These waters were coagulated with alum and other coagulants. Effects of coagulation on AMW distributions were quantified based on an absorbance slope index (ASI) calculated using NOM absorbance measured at 220, 230, 254 and 272 nm. This index can be calculated for any AMW fraction of NOM. Similarly to SUVA254, ASI values decrease consistently in coagulated waters and are correlated with trihalomethane yields. Comparison of ASI indexes in different water sources indicates the presence of both common trends and differences indicative of NOM site-specificity.  相似文献

The overall objective of this research was to determine the effects of physical and chemical activated carbon characteristics on the simultaneous adsorption of trace organic contaminants and natural organic matter (NOM). A matrix of 12 activated carbon fibers (ACFs) with three activation levels and four surface chemistry levels (acid-washed, oxidized, hydrogen-treated, and ammonia-treated) was studied to systematically evaluate pore structure and surface chemistry phenomena. Also, three commercially available granular activated carbons (GACs) were tested. The relatively hydrophilic fuel additive methyl tertiary-butyl ether (MTBE) and the relatively hydrophobic solvent trichloroethene (TCE) served as micropollutant probes. A comparison of adsorption isotherm data collected in the presence and absence of NOM showed that percent reductions of single-solute TCE and MTBE adsorption capacities that resulted from the presence of co-adsorbing NOM were not strongly affected by the chemical characteristics of activated carbons. However, hydrophobic carbons were more effective adsorbents for both TCE and MTBE than hydrophilic carbons because enhanced water adsorption on the latter interfered with the adsorption of micropollutants from solutions containing NOM. With respect to pore structure, activated carbons should exhibit a large volume of micropores with widths that are about 1.5 times the kinetic diameter of the target adsorbate. Furthermore, an effective adsorbent should possess a micropore size distribution that extends to widths that are approximately twice the kinetic diameter of the target adsorbate to prevent pore blockage/constriction as a result of NOM adsorption.  相似文献

The impact of disinfection efficacy in natural waters was evaluated by performing disinfection assays using four untreated surface waters of various qualities and ultra-pure buffered waters as a baseline condition for comparison. Bacillus subtilis spores were spiked in these waters and disinfection assays were conducted at 22 degrees C using either free chlorine or chlorine dioxide. Assays using indigenous aerobic spores were also completed. The inactivation kinetics in natural and ultra-pure buffered waters were not statistically different (at p = 0.05) while using free chlorine, as long as disinfectant decay was taken into account. Filtering natural waters through a 0.45 microm did not improve the sporicidal efficacy of chlorine. For three out of the four waters tested, the efficacy of chlorine dioxide was greater in natural waters compared to that observed in ultra-pure buffered waters. Such results are consistent with previous observations using ultra-pure waters supplemented with NOM-extract from the Suwannee River. Similar to free chlorine results, the impact of filtration (0.45 microm) on the efficacy of chlorine dioxide was not statistically significant.  相似文献

The formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) is a public health concern. An important way to evaluate the presence of DBPs is in terms of the total organic halogen (TOX), which can be further specified into total organic chlorine (TOCl), bromine (TOBr), and iodine (TOI). The formation and distribution of halogen-specific TOX during chlorination and chloramination of natural organic matter (NOM) isolates in the presence of bromide and iodide ions were studied. As expected, chloramination produced significantly less TOX than chlorination. TOCl was the dominant species formed in both chlorination and chloramination. TOI was always produced in chloramination, but not in chlorination when high chlorine dose was used, due to the limited presence of HOI in chlorination as a result of the oxidation of iodide to iodate in the presence of excess chlorine. The formation of TOI during chloramination increased as the initial iodide ion concentration increased, with a maximum of ∼60% of the initial iodide ion becoming incorporated into NOM. Iodine incorporation in NOM was consistently higher than bromine incorporation, demonstrating that the competitive reactions between bromine and iodine species in chloramination favoured the formation of HOI and thus TOI, rather than TOBr. Correlations between the aromatic character of the NOM isolates (SUVA254 and % aromatic C) and the concentrations of overall TOX and halogen-specific TOX in chloramination were observed. This indicates that the aromatic moieties in NOM, as indicated by SUVA254 and % aromatic C, play an important role in the formation of overall TOX and halogen-specific TOX in chloramination. THMs comprised only a fraction of TOX, up to 7% in chloramination and up to 47% in chlorination. Although chloramine produces less TOX than chlorine, it formed proportionally more non-THM DBPs than chlorine. These non-THM DBPs are mostly unknown, corresponding to unknown health risks. Considering the higher potential for formation of iodinated DBPs and unknown DBPs associated with the use of chloramine, water utilities need to carefully balance the risks and benefits of using chloramine as an alternative disinfectant to chlorine in order to satisfy guideline values for THMs.  相似文献

Environmentally-friendly disinfection methods are needed in many industrial applications. As a natural metabolite of many organisms, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-based disinfection may be such a method as long as H2O2 is used in non-toxic concentrations. Nevertheless, when applied alone as a disinfectant, H2O2 concentrations need to be high enough to achieve significant pathogen reduction, and this may lead to phytotoxicity. This paper shows how H2O2 disinfection concentrations could be significantly reduced by using the synergic lethality of H2O2 and sunlight the first time for fungi and disinfection. Experiments were performed on spores of Fusarium solani, the ubiquitous, pytho- and human pathogenic fungus. Laboratory (250-mL bottles) and pilot plant solar reactors (2 × 14 L compound parabolic collectors, CPCs) were employed with distilled water and real well water under natural sunlight. This opens the way to applications for agricultural water resources, seed disinfection, curing of fungal skin infections, etc.  相似文献

The degradation of two pesticides, bromoxynil and trifluralin, was investigated in ultrapure and natural water solutions under ultraviolet (UV) light and a combination of UV and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The effect of pH on the photooxidation of the pesticides was also studied. The results indicated that under direct photolysis with monochromatic light at 253.7 nm and different conditions, the photochemical rates followed first-order kinetics, with fluence-based rate constants ranging from 9.15 × 10−4 to 6.37 × 10−3 cm2 mJ−1 and 7.63 × 10−3 to 1.47 × 10−2 cm2 mJ−1 for bromoxynil and trifluralin, respectively. Quantum yields, in the range of 0.08-0.25 for bromoxynil and 0.12-0.72 for trifluralin, were observed in experiments using ultrapure water. The study also found that the UV/H2O2 process enhanced the oxidation rate in comparison to direct photolysis. A 90% degradation with UV dose of 333 and 188 mJ cm−2 was achieved for bromoxynil and trifluralin, respectively, in natural water, in presence of 8.8 × 10−4 M H2O2. To assess the aquatic toxicity, the Microtox® 81.9% screening test protocol was used before and after treatment. The test results indicated a decrease in the acute toxicity of the samples after treatment for both pesticides.  相似文献

The kinetics of photodegradation of the pesticide metaldehyde by UV/H2O2 and UV/TiO2 in laboratory grade water and a natural surface water were studied. Experiments were carried out in a bench scale collimated beam device using UVC radiation. Metaldehyde was efficiently degraded by both processes in laboratory grade water at identical rates of degradation (0.0070 and 0.0067 cm2 mJ−1 for UV/TiO2 and UV/H2O2 respectively) when optimised doses were used. The ratio between oxidant and metaldehyde was significantly higher for H2O2 due to its low photon absorption efficiency at 254 nm. However, the presence of background organic compounds in natural water severely affected the rate of degradation, and whilst the pseudo first-order rate constant of degradation by UV/H2O2 was slowed down (0.0020 cm2 mJ−1), the degradation was completely inhibited for the UV/TiO2 process (k′ = 0.00007 cm2 mJ−1) due to the blockage of active sites on TiO2 surface by the background organic material.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the genotoxic activity of water after UV/H2O2 oxidation and GAC filtration. Pre-treated surface water from three locations was treated with UV/H2O2 with medium pressure (MP) lamps and passed through granulated activated carbon (GAC). Samples taken before and after each treatment step were extracted and concentrated by solid phase extraction (SPE) and analyzed for genotoxicity using the Comet assay with HepG2 cells and the Ames II assay. The Comet assay showed no genotoxic response in any of the samples. In the Ames II, no genotoxic response was obtained with the TAMix (a mix of six strains), but the TA98 strain showed an increase in genotoxic activity after MP-UV/H2O2 for all three locations. GAC post treatment effectively reduced the activities to control levels at two of the three locations and to below the level of the pre-treated water at one site. The results indicate that UV/H2O2 treatment may lead to the formation of genotoxic by-products, which can be removed by subsequent GAC filtration.  相似文献

The degradation of natural organic matter (NOM) in homogeneous and heterogeneous advanced oxidation processes (AOP) was simulated using a simple underlying physical model. By treating the NOM molecules as linear chains and allowing them to be cleaved at any point selected at random, it is possible to reproduce well the results for homogeneous AOP experiments. To simulate a heterogeneous process, a bias was introduced (in the form of different weights for different chain lengths) according to literature data on the adsorption of NOM onto TiO2 nanoparticle agglomerates. After introduction of the (adsorption) bias, the simulation closely followed the degradation sequence observed in heterogeneous photocatalysis with TiO2 suspensions. Thus, the experimental results for homogeneous AOP may well be explained by a random breakdown of the NOM molecules; that is, we find no evidence for a selective degradation of the large molecular size material. However, a selectivity is present in the heterogeneous system due to the differential adsorption of NOM onto the reactive surface.  相似文献

Influence of natural organic matter (NOM) on the morphology of lead surfaces exposed to drinking water and on the properties of lead-containing colloidal particles was explored based on the data of scanning electron microscopy, sequential filtrations, measurements of particle size distributions and electrophoretic potential. It was demonstrated that NOM prevented the formation of cerussite and hindered the growth of hydrocerussite crystals. Measurements of zeta-potential showed that the surface activity was highest for unaltered NOM, while ozonation and chlorination decreased it. The concentrations of soluble lead and tin increased several fold in the presence of NOM, while large colloidal particles of lead and solder corrosion products tended to break down to form smaller fragments. It is suggested that these phenomena are important for understanding of lead release mechanisms in drinking water.  相似文献

Nano-scale zero-valent iron (NZVI) particles are increasingly used to remediate aquifers contaminated with hazardous oxidized pollutants such as trichloroethylene (TCE). However, the high reduction potential of NZVI can result in toxicity to indigenous bacteria and hinder their participation in the cleanup process. Here, we report on the mitigation of the bactericidal activity of NZVI towards gram-negative Escherichia coli and gram-positive Bacillus subtilis in the presence of Suwannee River humic acids (SRHA), which were used as a model for natural organic matter (NOM). B. subtilis was more tolerant to NZVI (1 g/L) than E. coli in aerobic bicarbonate-buffered medium. SRHA (10 mg/L) significantly mitigated toxicity, and survival rates after 4 h exposure increased to similar levels observed for controls not exposed to NZVI. TEM images showed that the surface of NZVI and E. coli was surrounded by a visible floccus. This decreased the zeta potential of NZVI from −30 to −45 mV and apparently exerted electrosteric hindrance to minimize direct contact with bacteria, which mitigated toxicity. H2 production during anaerobic NZVI corrosion was not significantly hindered by SRHA (p > 0.05), However, NZVI reactivity towards TCE (20 mg/L), assessed by the first-order dechlorination rate coefficient, decreased by 23%. Overall, these results suggest that the presence of NOM offers a tradeoff for NZVI-based remediation, with higher potential for concurrent or sequential bioremediation at the expense of partially inhibited abiotic reactivity with the target contaminant (TCE).  相似文献

The composition of natural organic matter (NOM) fractions before and after the reaction with chlorine dioxide as well as ozone was studied by means of total luminescence spectroscopy (TLS) and synchronous scanning fluorescence measurements. The excitation-emission matrices spectra (EEMs) of natural as well as oxidised NOM fractions revealed two well-resolved bands with maxima at Ex/Em of 250-265/422-452 nm and at Ex/Em 300-336/414-446 nm ascribed to humic and fulvic material. The study of emission and synchronous spectra also confirmed the presence of protein-like constituents in all examined NOM fractions. The study of EEMs proved, that oxidation of all NOM fractions with ClO(2) caused mainly the break-up of molecules into smaller fragments and a decrease of the aromaticity. Changes in EEMs after the oxidation of individual NOM fractions with O(3) confirmed the formation of a significant amount of ozonation by-products, i.e. carboxylic acids, aldehydes and ketones during the oxidation process. In addition, the fluorescence studies confirmed relatively high reactivity of all NOM fractions with ClO(2) as well as with ozone.  相似文献

Natural organic matter (NOM) and trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP) removal were evaluated by ultrafiltration (UF) and nanofiltration (NF). Ten different raw water sources in Alicante province (SE Spain) were analysed. Five types of membranes of different materials were tested with a dead-end-type stirred UF cell. Additional measurements, such as dissolved organic carbon, ultraviolet absorbance (254nm), THMFP, ion concentration, pH, conductivity, etc. were made on raw water, permeates and concentrates. The SUVA value was used to determine the hydrophobicity of the water analysed. The elimination of NOM and THMFP is correlated with the molecular weight (MW) of NOM determined by size exclusion chromatography (SEC). The flux decline trends were correlated with cation concentration. NOM removal by UF is low, which correlates with the average MW determined by SEC with an average value of 922g/mol (between 833 and 1031g/mol). However, the NOM removal obtained with the NF90 and NF270 NF membranes for all water sources is almost complete (90%). THMFP removal is related to hydrophobicity and permeability of membrane. The NFT50 membrane removes almost 100% of the THMFP of more hydrophobic waters.  相似文献

This study used annular reactors (AR) to investigate, under controlled laboratory conditions, the effects of temperature and biodegradable organic matter (BOM) on the free chlorine residual needed to control biofilm accumulation, as measured by heterotrophic plate count (HPC) bacteria. Biofilm was grown on PVC coupons, initially in the absence of chlorine, at 6, 12, and 18 degrees C, in the presence and absence of a BOM supplement (250 microg C/L) added as acetate. During the early stages of chlorine addition, when no measurable free chlorine residual was present, a reduction in biofilm HPC numbers was observed. Subsequently, once sufficient chlorine was added to establish a residual, the biofilm HPC numbers expressed as log CFU/cm2 fell exponentially with the increase in free chlorine residual. Temperature appeared to have an important effect on both the chlorine demand of the system and the free chlorine residual required to control the biofilm HPC numbers to the detection limit (3.2 Log CFU/cm2). For the water supplemented with BOM, a strong linear correlation was found between the temperature and the free chlorine residual required to control the biofilm. At 6 degrees C, the presence of a BOM supplement appeared to substantially increase the level of free chlorine residual required to control the biofilm. The results of these laboratory experiments provide qualitative indications of effects that could be expected in full-scale systems, rather than to make quantitative predictions.  相似文献

The presence of natural organic matter (NOM) poses several challenges to the commercial practice of UV/H2O2 process for micropollutant removal. During the commercial application of UV/H2O2 advanced oxidation treatment, NOM is broken down into smaller species potentially affecting biostability by increasing Assimilable Organic Carbon (AOC) and Biodegradable Organic Carbon (BDOC) of water. This work investigated the potential impact of UV/H2O2 treatment on the molecular weight distribution of NOM and biostability of different water sources. A recently developed flow cytometric method for enumeration of bacteria was utilized to assess biological stability of the treated water at various stages through measurement of AOC. BDOC was also assessed for comparison and to better study the biostability of water. Both AOC and BDOC increased by about 3-4 times over the course of treatment, indicating the reduction of biological stability. Initial TOC and the source of NOM were found to be influencing the biostability profile of the treated water. Using high performance size exclusion chromatography, a wide range of organic molecule weights were found responsible for AOC increase; however, low molecular weight organics seemed to contribute more. Positive and meaningful correlations were observed between BDOC and AOC of different waters that underwent different treatments.  相似文献
