ABSTRACT

The paper presents new data for thin-layer drying characteristics of Thai long grain rough rice measured under various conditions of drying air temperature (35 to 60?°C), drying air relative humidity (30 to 70 % ) and the initial moisture content of rough rice (20 to 40 % dry basis). Empirical equations were developed using the instantaneous weight, the weight loss and drying time, with temperature, relative humidity and initial moisture content of rough rice as the independent variables. A computer program was developed to simulate the deep-bed drying process. The thin-layer drying equation developed before was used in the computer simulation. Experimental data from the fixed bed dryer were compared with the results from the calculation.  相似文献

Drying of wheat (Algerian cultivar: Hadba03) in thin layers was studied and mass flux phenomenon was used to characterize the thin-layer drying process. Thin-layer drying of wheat was determined for drying air temperature range of 40–60°C, relative humidity of drying air from 10 to 30%, air velocity of 0.7 m/s, and initial grain moisture from 26 to 31% (dry basis). Equilibrium moisture content of wheat was determined using desorption isotherms obtained from the thin-layer drying data. An equilibrium model for a stationary deep bed with drying air moving vertically upward was developed using mass and energy balance between grain and drying air in the bed and drying air characteristics obtained from thin-layer drying experiments. The developed model was validated by drying wheat in a laboratory dryer using different drying air temperatures and initial moisture contents.  相似文献

Thin-layer drying characteristics of rough rice were determined at temperature ranging from 11.8 to 51 °C and for relative humidities ranging from 37.1% to 91.3%, with initial moisture contents in the range of 24.7 to 41.6% dry basis. An oven, a self contain air conditioning unit, recently developed in Japan, was used for this experiments. With this apparatus, very smooth drying curves were obtained. The data of sample weight, and dry and wet bulb temperatures of the drying air were recorded continuously throughout the drying period for each test. The drying process was terminated when the moisture content change in 24 h was less than 0.2 % d.b. (weight change was less than 0.05 g). The final points were recorded as the dynamic equilibrium moisture contents.

The drying data were than fitted to the Page model. The model gave a very good fit for the moisture content with an average standard error of 0.294 % d.b¨ Both the drying parameters, K and N, are function of drying air temperature and relative humidity. The effect of variable initial moisture content was also described effectively by the empirical Page model. The drying time employed had a large effect on the K and N values. The results presented here, over typically 5 day drying, will be useful in the long term moisture transfer process occurring during ventilated storage.  相似文献

This work obtains thin-layer drying data for rough rice from 108 treatments. A thin-layer drying equation is also derived using these data with drying air absolute humidity, drying air temperature, tempering time interval and drying time interval as the independent variables. The solution of classical diffusion equation based on the assumption of average moisture diffusion coefficient did not adequately represent natural convection drying of rough rice in thin vertical columns exposed on both sides to hot air. Instantaneous moisture diffusivity coefficients determined from experimental drying curves decreased continuously with an increase in exposure duration and were linearly related to moisture ratio. The proponionality constant which was called apparent moisture diffusion coefficient was distinctly related to air temperature, relative humidity, and initial moisture content of rough rice. The modified moisture diffusion model using the instantaneous moisture diffusion coefficient was found to best represent the moisture removal from bulk rough rice.  相似文献

This article studies the possibility of reducing the high initial moisture content of wet rough rice using a small-scale low-cost pneumatic conveying dryer as a first stage dryer. The parameters investigated are final moisture content, surface temperature of rough rice, head rice yield, drying rate, power consumption per unit mass of evaporated water, and physical characteristics of rice. Parametric effects of the following variables are examined: velocity of drying air from 20 to 30 m/s, feed rate of rough rice from 150 to 350 kg/h, initial moisture content from 22 to 26% (wet basis), and drying air temperature from 35 to 70°C. From the experimental results, it is found that this drying method can be used for fresh rough rice with an initial moisture content of over 24% (wet basis). The drying process is able to lead to very rapid drying without any grain quality problems such as cracks in the rice kernel. The moisture content can be reduced to approximately 18% (wet basis) or about 5–6% of the initial moisture content within 3–4 s. The optimal drying air temperature is in the range of 50 to 60°C. A comparison of pneumatic conveying drying data obtained from the present study with fluidized bed drying data reported in the open literature is also discussed.  相似文献

V-type amylose–lipid complexes present in partially parboiled rice can decrease starch digestibility. Formation of such complexes can be accomplished using high-temperature fluidized bed drying; the degree of the complexes depends on the thermal condition. The effects of drying media (hot air and humidified hot air), operating conditions (drying air temperature and relative humidity [RH]), and the initial moisture content on the degree of V-type crystallinity and subsequent starch digestibility (or glycemic index, GI) and brown rice texture were examined experimentally. The results showed that paddy drying with humidified hot air (HHA) requires a longer time than hot air (HA). Higher drying air temperature, RH, and initial moisture content of paddy yield higher degrees of starch gelatinization and V-type amylose–lipid complexes. The brown rice dried by HA or HHA had lower starch digestibility and a harder texture than the reference sample. Within the range of parameters studied, to obtain the lowest GI for the dried brown rice, paddy at an initial moisture content of 33% (db) should be dried by HHA at 150°C and 6.4% RH.  相似文献

A breakage model was investigated for thin-layer drying of rough rice. The breakage model developed can predict the percentage of head rice (E/Eo) as an exponential function of the grain moisture. Experimental data of the rice moisture content during drying were fitted with a theoretical model of the drying process to obtain the parameters. Experimental data of percentage head rice and moisture content were fitted to obtain the parameters of breakage model. Both functions were used together to obtain a drying-breakage model. This model allows us to predict the drying time required to achieve a rice moisture content desired and to estimate the head rice yield percentage for this moisture content.  相似文献

By adopting the central-composite experiment design, the response surface methodology was used to optimize operating conditions of rubber wood drying. The independent variables are initial moisture content of rubber wood, and three drying environment parameters namely, temperature, relative humidity, and air velocity. The investigating responses are final moisture content, drying time, and energy consumption. The restriction of the optimization is the designated final moisture content, which is not greater than 16%. The third-order polynomial models with transformed responses were developed from experiment data to generate 3-D response surfaces and contour plots. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed to identify the significant parameters affecting the rubber wood drying. Drying temperature and holding relative humidity are those two influential operating parameters that significantly control the final moisture of rubber wood and affect the drying time and energy. The multiple contour plots of drying responses show that the optimum operating regions are located mainly at high temperature drying zone. The high temperature drying practice can save energy and drying time by 44 and 25% respectively, in comparison to the conventional temperature drying.  相似文献

A lab model vacuum-assisted solar dryer was developed to study the drying kinetics of tomato slices (4, 6, and 8 mm thicknesses) compared with open sun drying under the weather conditions of Montreal, Canada. The drying study showed that the time taken for drying of tomato slices of 4, 6, and 8 mm thicknesses from the initial moisture content of 94.0% to the final moisture content of around 11.5 ± 0.5% (w.b.) was 360, 480, and 600 min in vacuum-assisted solar dryer and 450, 600, and 750 min in open sun drying, respectively. During drying, it was observed that the temperature inside the vacuum chamber was increased to 48°C when the maximum ambient temperature was only 30°C. The quality of tomato slices dried under vacuum-assisted solar dryer was of superior quality in terms of color retention and rehydration ratio. The drying kinetics using thin-layer drying models and the influence of weather parameters such as ambient air temperature, relative humidity, solar insolation, and wind velocity on drying of tomato slices were evaluated.  相似文献

This study applied a partial differential equation model with newly-developed thin layer equations to simulate batch re-circulating dryers under different drying conditions, which are combinations of four parameters: drying air temperature, drying air absolute humidity, drying period duration, and tempering period duration. The moisture change and the drying rate, which were of particular concern with respect to the simulated data, were investigated. Validation drying tests were carried out in a lab scale re-circulating rice dryer. Two sets of experiment were performed involving different drying parameters to simulate re-circulating rice dryers which are extensively used in Asian countries. Comparing these two experimental data with two simulated drying curves respectively, it revealed they are quite consist with each other under the same drying conditions. Drying air temperature, drying air humidity, drying period duration and tempering period duration significantly influenced the drying rate. Under the same drying condition, the tempering period duration effect was insignificant to the drying rate in drying zone as the drying air humidity or temperature increased. And, a higher initial moisture content obtained higher time and energy efficiency for the re-circulating rice dryers.  相似文献

This study aims to experimentally investigate the drying characteristics and quality of a paddy dried by hot air (HA) and humidified hot air (HHA) fluidization technique. Qualities such as head rice yield (HRY), white belly, degree of gelatinization (DSG), and color of dried paddy were evaluated. A paddy with an initial moisture content of 14% d.b. was soaked in hot water at a temperature of 70?°C for 5?h then dried at a temperature of 130,150, and 170?°C, relative humidity in the range of 0.3–12%, an air velocity of 3.9 m/s, and a bed height of 10?cm. The results showed that the drying time of the paddy in the HHA condition took longer than the HA drying condition. Because HHA provided a higher grain temperature and a slow rate of drying, the degree of starch gelatinization was significantly higher when compared to HA. The subsequent HRY was relatively higher than using HA drying. However, the color of the sample obtained from the HHA condition was relatively browner, but the parboiled rice product still had a light brown color for the drying temperature range used in this study. To produce parboiled rice, HHA could be operated up to the temperature of 170?°C, relative humidity of 6%, and DOM of 10%.  相似文献

Knowledge of peanut drying parameters, such as temperature and relative humidity of the ambient air, temperature and relative humidity of the air being blown into the peanuts, and kernel moisture content, is essential in managing the dryer for optimal drying rate. The optimal drying rate is required to preserve quality and desired flavor. In the current peanut-drying process, such parameters are elusive in real time and are either not measured or only measured periodically by an operator. A peanut-drying monitoring system, controlled by an embedded microcontroller and consisting of relative humidity and temperature sensors and a microwave peanut moisture sensor, was developed to monitor drying parameters in real time. It was deployed during the 2014 peanut harvest season at a peanut buying point in central Georgia, USA. It was placed in 45-ft (13.7-m) drying semitrailers to monitor in-shell kernel moisture content, temperature of the drying peanuts, temperature, and relative humidity of the exhaust air from the peanuts and relative humidity of the air being blown into the peanuts in real time. In-shell kernel moisture content was determined with a standard error of performance of 0.55% moisture content when compared to the reference oven-drying method. Data from drying parameters were time-stamped and stored on a CompactFlash card every 12?s and were used to assess the efficiency of dryer control settings. Ambient air conditions were measured by an on-site weather station. Results of the study support the value of such a monitoring system and show that implementation of the system for dryer control has the potential for saving a buying point, in the current economical context, as much as $22,000 annually in costs of electric energy and propane.  相似文献

To monitor the air-drying time of dimensional lumber, load beams equipped with a data logger were used to collect lumber weight loss data. A weather station on the same site as the air-drying experiment was used to obtain the information regarding air temperature and relative humidity and wind velocity. A multiple regression model for estimating the drying rates for 2-in. × 4-in. × 8-ft (38.5-mm × 90-mm × 250-cm) green spruce/pine dimensional lumber was developed. Data analysis revealed that wind direction did not have a significant effect on the rate of moisture loss. Thus, the resulting regression equation takes temperature, relative humidity, initial moisture content, and wind speed into account. Based on historical weather information for a particular location, the model developed can be used as a practical guideline for estimating air drying time and therefore offers the user a valuable tool for planning green yard inventory.  相似文献
