Even though friction stir welding (FSW) has been shown to produce high performing butt joints, stress concentration at the weld edges in overlap FSW significantly reduces the performance of these joints. By combining FSW and adhesive bonding into a friction stir (FS) weld bonding, joint mechanical performance is greatly improved. Quasistatic and fatigue strength of the proposed FS weld‐bonding joints was assessed and benchmarked against overlap FSW and adhesive bonding. The characterization of the structural adhesive is also presented, including differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), as well as mechanical characterization with curing temperature. A small process parameter study was made to select proper FSW parameters for AA6082‐T6 overlap FSW and FS weld‐bonded joints. FS weld bonding achieved a significant increase in quasistatic and fatigue strength when compared with overlap FSW, with 79.9% of the fatigue strength of adhesive‐bonded joints at 106 cycles, whereas FSW had 41.6%.  相似文献

The present investigation is concerned with high‐cycle axial fatigue testing of a 2‐mm AA6060‐T6 hybrid metal extrusion & bonding (HYB) butt weld produced in the solid state using AA6082 filler metal addition. The results complement the three‐point bend testing and the tensile testing done in two previous studies. In this study, optical microscope and scanning electron microscope examinations have been carried out to reveal the joint macro/microstructure and document possible surface and root defects deemed to affect fatigue life. In the as‐welded condition, the HYB weld suffers from surface irregularities at the weld face and ‘kissing’ bond formation in the root region. Despite of this, the subsequent testing shows that the fatigue properties exceed those reported for comparable AA6082‐T6 gas metal arc butt welds and matching those reported for corresponding high‐strength laser beam and friction stir weldments.  相似文献

Abstract: In this work, the viscoplastic behaviour of 6082‐T6 and 7075‐T6 aluminium alloys is examined over a wide range of strain rates. Three different testing techniques were applied to this investigation: low‐rate experiments were performed using a regular servo‐hydraulic testing machine, high‐rate tests were conducted using a split Hopkinson bar apparatus and very‐high‐rate experiments were carried out using a miniaturised direct impact test arrangement. The latter testing set‐up allowed for the characterisation of material flow at strain rates up to . These experimental results showed a sharp increase in the rate sensitivity of the materials once a threshold loading rate of is exceeded. This behaviour may be attributed to the presence of viscous drag on high‐velocity dislocation motion. In addition, the thermo‐viscoplastic behaviour of the 6082‐T6 and 7075‐T6 aluminium alloys was analytically described using the extended Rusinek–Klepaczko model of viscous drag effects. Refill friction stir spot welding is a solid‐state process technology that is suitable for welding lightweight materials in similar or dissimilar overlapped configuration. In this study, the fatigue behaviour of single overlapped spot joints of AA2024‐T3 was studied. To statistically analyse the fatigue data, a 2‐parameter Weibull distribution was deployed, considering several reliabilities (Re = 0.99, Re = 0.90, Re = 0.5, Re = 0.10). To obtain an optimized weld parameter according to the fatigue behaviour, 2 different weld conditions were studied, taking into account the effect of the hook formation. The microstructure analyses and microhardness profiles showed great similarity in both weld conditions. However, these conditions presented distinct interfacial hook profiles, in which the interfacial hook downward represented better fatigue life and infinite fatigue life at 15% of the maximum strength load. The fracture surfaces obtained from 3 different fracture modes were investigated by using scanning electron microscopy; the crack was tracked and described according to its fracture mechanisms from its initiation until the final failures. In this study, we investigate the influence of surface cooling on the life of specimens undergoing low-to-intermediate-cycle fatigue. The experiments involve rotating-bending tests with Stainless Steel 304L and Steel 4145 specimens. External cooling air is provided via a vortex tube at a constant supply rate. Results are compared with the case of fatigue at room temperature. The results of experiments reveal significant improvement in fatigue life when the surface of the specimen is cooled. A possible explanation for the observed phenomenon is the notion of self-organization within the context of irreversible thermodynamics.  相似文献

The fatigue crack growth properties of friction stir welded joints of 2024‐T3 aluminium alloy have been studied under constant load amplitude (increasing‐ΔK), with special emphasis on the residual stress (inverse weight function) effects on longitudinal and transverse crack growth rate predictions (Glinka's method). In general, welded joints were more resistant to longitudinally growing fatigue cracks than the parent material at threshold ΔK values, when beneficial thermal residual stresses decelerated crack growth rate, while the opposite behaviour was observed next to KC instability, basically due to monotonic fracture modes intercepting fatigue crack growth in weld microstructures. As a result, fatigue crack growth rate (FCGR) predictions were conservative at lower propagation rates and non‐conservative for faster cracks. Regarding transverse cracks, intense compressive residual stresses rendered welded plates more fatigue resistant than neat parent plate. However, once the crack tip entered the more brittle weld region substantial acceleration of FCGR occurred due to operative monotonic tensile modes of fracture, leading to non‐conservative crack growth rate predictions next to KC instability. At threshold ΔK values non‐conservative predictions values resulted from residual stress relaxation. Improvements on predicted FCGR values were strongly dependent on how the progressive plastic relaxation of the residual stress field was considered.  相似文献

The present investigation has been carried out in order to study the influence of the previous accumulated fatigue damage induced during high cycle fatigue (HCF), on the fracture toughness parameters of an AA6082-T6 aluminium alloy. The results show that previous fatigue damage accumulated in HCF does not affect the tensile static mechanical properties of the material, but gives rise to a significant debit of the toughness properties on this aluminium alloy. The fracture toughness results have shown that the crack opening displacement at a crack extension of 0.2 mm (COD0.2) decreases in the range of ∼18 to 36% whereas the value of the non-linear fracture mechanics parameter  J 0.2, decreases in the range of ∼11 to 25% at applied maximum stresses of 200 and 275 MPa, respectively. Optical microscopy observations conducted on the surface of the specimens subjected to HCF damage indicate the existence of microcracks ∼15 to 25 μm long nucleated along the grain boundaries of the material. Also, the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations of the fracture surfaces after the tearing tests show the predominance of a ductile fracture mechanism for the material prior to residual fatigue damage, whereas a mixed ductile–brittle fracture mechanism and the presence of flat facets were observed on the fracture surfaces of the specimens with a fatigue damage of 0.70.  相似文献

Abstract: The effects of shot‐peening on fretting fatigue crack growth behaviour in titanium alloy, Ti‐6A1‐4V were investigated. Three shot‐peening intensities: 4A, 7A and 10A were considered. The analysis involved the fracture mechanics and finite element sub‐modelling technique to estimate crack propagation lives. These computations were supplemented with the experimentally measured total fretting fatigue lives of laboratory specimens to assess the crack initiation lives. Shot‐peening has significant effect on the initiation/propagation phases of fretting fatigue cracks; however this effect depends upon the shot‐peening intensity. The ratio of crack initiation and total life increased while the ratio of the crack propagation and total life decreased with an increase of shot‐peening intensity. Effects of residual compressive stress from shot‐peening on the crack growth behaviour were also investigated. The fretting fatigue crack propagation component of the total life with relaxation increased in comparison to its counterpart without relaxation in each shot‐peened intensity case while the initiation component decreased. Improvement in the fretting fatigue life from the shot‐peening and also with an increase in the shot‐peening intensity appears to be not always due to increase in the crack initiation resistance from shot‐peened induced residual compressive stress.  相似文献

Dissimilar friction stir welds were produced in 3 mm thick plates of AA6082-T6 and AA5083-H111 aluminum alloys using SiC as reinforcing material. The optimum weld presents a good distribution of nanoparticles in the weld nugget and mechanical mixing of the two alloys as well as further grain refinement compared to the one without nanoparticles. Higher hardness in the weld nugget is also evidenced, followed by enhanced ultimate tensile strength and elongation values. All specimens, after the tensile test, were lead to fracture at the heat affected zone of AA6082-T6 and specifically at the region of the lowest hardness.  相似文献

The effects of advancing speed and rotational speed on the microstructure and the mechanical properties of friction stir welded 7075‐T6 aluminium alloy sheets were studied. The fatigue strength of sound joints was measured and compared to tensile testing results. Macrographs and microhardness maps were carried out to reveal the microstructure transformations. Fractographic observations were made to identify the failure mechanisms. The effects of welding parameters on the fatigue strength are discussed in terms of welding pitch k (mm/rev) and heat input (J/mm). At a high welding pitch, crack initiation at the root of the circular grooves left by the tool on the weld surface is the most detrimental failure mechanism. As the size and the depth of the grooves are related to the welding pitch, the fatigue strength increases when the welding pitch is reduced. However, when the heat input is excessive, the failure is caused by sub‐surface defects produced after abnormal stirring and/or by softening of the heat‐affected zone. Lateral lips on the weld surface edges also have an effect on the fatigue strength for intermediate welding pitch values.  相似文献

Fluidized bed processing is a relatively novel method for coating metal substrates. A detailed study was carried out into surface property and in micro-structure changes induced by fluidized bed processing. In particular, fluidized bed processing of AA 6082 T6 aluminum alloy components using alumina Al2O3 powder was investigated. Firstly, the build up of Al2O3 films was studied and characterized in terms of coating thickness and adhesion. It was found that trends of deposited Al2O3 were consistent with fluidized bed processing time. Secondly, the effect of fluidized bed treatment on surface properties of processed components was examined. Surface morphology was significantly affected and its evolution according to processing time was accounted for. Both compressive residual stresses and increased dislocation density were induced by treatment of external layers of samples, and significant hardening was also detected. Lastly, the ability of fluidized bed processing was tested on ‘ad hoc' fatigue samples. Rupture of fluidized bed treated samples as well as untreated samples was also discussed. At any rate, the fatigue behavior of processed components significantly improved. This quite new and unprecedented result is ascribed to the compressive residual stresses and work hardening induced by FB treatment in the outermost surface layers of the aluminum alloy.  相似文献

This paper presents methodologies for crack growth study and fatigue remaining life prediction of reinforced concrete structural components accounting for the corrosion effects. Stress intensity factor (SIF) has been computed by using the principle of superposition. At each incremental crack length, net SIF has been computed as the difference of SIF of plain concrete and reinforcement. The behaviour of reinforcement has been considered as elasto-plastic. Uniform corrosion rate has been assumed in the modeling. Corrosion effect has been accounted in the form of reduction in the diameter and modulus of elasticity of steel. Numerical studies have been carried out to validate the methodologies. It is observed that the predicted remaining life for RC beam without corrosion effects is significantly larger compared to plain beams. The predicted remaining life decreases with increase in percentage of corrosion.  相似文献

The microstructural and mechanical behavior of hybrid metal matrix composite based on aluminum alloy 6082-T6 reinforced with silicon carbide (SiC) and boron carbide (B4C) particles was investigated. For this purpose, the hybrid composites were fabricated using conventional stir casting process by varying weight percentages of 5, 10, 15, and 20?wt% of (SiC?+?B4C) mixture. Dispersion of the reinforced particles was studied with x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy analyses. Mechanical properties such as micro-hardness, impact strength, ultimate tensile strength, percentage elongation, density, and porosity were investigated on hybrid composites at room temperature. The results revealed that the increase in weight percentage of (SiC?+?B4C) mixture gives superior hardness and tensile strength with slight decrease in percentage elongation. However, some reduction in both hardness and tensile strength was observed in hybrid composites with 20?wt% of (SiC?+?B4C) mixture. As compared to the un-reinforced alloy, the improvement in hardness and tensile strength for hybrid composites was found to be 10% and 21%, respectively. Reduction in impact strength and density with increase in porosity was also reported with the addition of reinforcement.  相似文献

Abstract: In this investigation, an efficient fatigue life computation method under variable amplitude loading of structural components has been proposed. Attention in this study is focused on total fatigue life estimation of aircraft structural components. Flat specimens with central hole made of quenched and tempered steel 13H11N2V2MF were tested as representatives of different structural components. Total fatigue life of these specimens, defined as sum of fatigue crack initiation and crack growth life, was experimentally determined. Specimens were tested by blocks of positive variable amplitude loading. Crack initiation life was computed using theory of low‐cycle fatigue (LCF) properties. Cyclic stress–strain curve, Masing’s curve and approximate Sonsino’s curve were used for determining stress–strain response at critical point of considered specimens. Computation of crack initiation life was realised using Palmgren–Miner’s linear rule of damage accumulation, applied on Morrow’s curves of LCF properties. Crack growth life was predicted using strain energy density method. In this method, the same LCF properties were used for crack initiation life and for crack growth life computations also. Computation results are compared with own experimentally obtained results.  相似文献
