In the shadow of death

Death dogged Vincent's footsteps throughout his life, and formed a core component of his unconscious fantasy system. It cast a lugubrious shadow over all of his undertakings--he found little joy and less love in life. It found its way onto his canvases, both directly--the grinning death's head--and indirectly. It found expression in his portrayals of sowers and reapers, in his representations of trees--especially the highly symbolic treatments of cypresses--in the menacing crows hovering over storm-darkened fields of wheat, and finally in the images of Christ, suffering and dead, held in the embrace of a loving and grieving mother. If death was a bottomless pit that haunted him with its terrors, it was also a siren song that drew him ever closer to his destiny, ever closer to the edge of the pit. The power of that attraction lies in his identification with the dead Vincent whose place he had taken and whose name he bore. It was through that identification, and through the passageway of suffering and death that he would surcease in the arms of a loving and accepting mother whose warm embrace he had sought throughout his odyssey, but in vain. It was to be gained only in and through death. It was only through death that he would find rest from his pain and would gain the heavenly reward of his suffering in eternal love and bliss.     

Isolation and characteristics of UV-resistant revertants of recA-strains of Escherichia coli K-12

The paper presents the results of a study of UV-resistant revertants of some recA strains induced by different mutagens. It is shown that some of produced revertants differ from original recA strains in some properties. It is established that all UV-resistant revertant fall into three phenotypic groups on their recombination proficiency in crosses with different donor strains (Hfr C, Hfr 3.0SO, F' W1655) and in their sensitivity to UV and gamma-rays. It is concluded that all UVr revertants are rec A+ and carried mutations either in the same recA gene (true reversion or intragenic suppression) or in genes closely linked with recA.     

The elimination of oxygen-induced intergranular brittleness in iron by addition of scavengers

It was previously shown that vacuum melted iron can be made to exhibit intergranular brittleness at low testing temperatures if it is quenched from temperatures where carbon is in solid solution and that ductility can be restored by allowing carbon to segregate to grain boundaries (without permitting the formation of large carbides). It was suggested that this is due to scavenging of residual grain boundary oxygen by the carbon. This is substantiated by the present experiments in which aluminum additions were used to eliminate the intergranular weakness at all quenching temperatures. It is shown that titanium is not effective as an oxygen scavenger and restorer of grain boundary strength.     

Dominance variance in Fisher's model of assortative mating

It is argued that there is some confusion in the literature concerning the effect of assortative mating on dominance variance. It is shown that in Fisher's model of assortative mating additive deviations of one factor are correlated with additive deviations of another and that this correlation is responsible for the increase in genetic variance. The dominance deviations of one factor are independent of the dominance, as well as of the additive deviations of a second factor. It is shown that in Fisher's model of assortative mating and to the approximation used by him, the dominance variance does not change under assortative mating.     

The effect of rapid thermal fluctuations on the creep rate in Inconel 718

The creep properties of Inconel 718 under thermal cycling conditions were investigated. It was found that the creep rates under thermal cycling conditions are lower than the creep rates calculated from results of isothermal creep experiments. It was also found that an abrupt temperature decrease during steady-state creep is followed by a certain period of zero creep rate. It was shown that the decrease of strain rate during creep under cycling conditions is due to this stopping effect.     

Study of the possibility of stabilizing a levorin microbiological standard

The effect of a number of factors, providing increased stability of the levorin microbiological standard was studied. It was shown that air-tight packing and inert gas atmosphere (antibiotic storage in ampoules sealed under nitrogen) significantly increased the antibiotic stability. It was also shown that hydrochinone had the highest positive effect on levorin stability.     

Countertransference issues in the assessment and treatment of trauma recovery with victims of violent crime.

This article examines countertransference in the assessment and treatment of recovery from traumatic incidents of adulthood, with specific focus on victims of violent crime. It reviews Freud's impediment theory, with particular attention to implications concerning empathic strain and vicarious traumatization. It introduces Wilson and Lindy's Type I Countertransference (avoidance), Type II Countertransference (overidentification), and their respective manifestations. It then proposes a Type III Countertransference (communicative) that applies a more totalistic perspective that utilizes concepts of splitting, projection, projective identification, and intersubjectivity. It differentiates between countertransference orientations to trauma that are content-based or processed-based as well as those that may be figure or ground. Finally, it presents some common countertransference reactions and roles that become enacted and therefore have treatment implications, examines the interaction between therapeutic and real relationships as contributors to those scenarios, and presents case examples. The role of solute segregation in promoting the hardenability of steel

The two most potent promoters of hardenability in steel are boron and phosphorus. It appears that these elements function by segregating to austenite grain boundaries and interfering with the nucleation of proeutectoid ferrite. It is suggested that this occurs by the stabilization or alteration of the structure of certain special grain boundary re-gions which serve as favored nucleation sites for ferrite. It is demonstrated how at least part of the effect of alloying elements like manganese and chromium might be ascribed to their enhancement of phosphorus segregation. Under certain conditions phosphorus could be a useful addition to increase the hardenability of low alloy steels.     

Relation of implicit theories to the construction of personal histories.

It is hypothesized that people possess implicit theories regarding the inherent consistency of their attributes, as well as a set of principles concerning the conditions that are likely to promote personal change or stability. The nature of these theories is discussed in the context of a study of beliefs about life-span development. It is then suggested that people use their implicit theories of self to construct their personal histories. This formulation is used to interpret the results of a wide-ranging set of studies of memory of personal attributes. It is concluded that implicit theories of stability and change can lead to biases in recall. The extent and practical implications of these biases are discussed. The dependence of thrombocyte aggregation on temperature

The effect of temperature (range of 4-44 degrees C) upon induced aggregation of platelets from normal subjects was studied. It was shown that temperature dependences of aggregation degree and rate have maxima. A relationship between aggregation agonist kind and some features of the temperature dependence curve of the aggregation parameters is established. It was shown that the limitation of platelet membrane lipids mobility by means of lipids peroxidation leads to the shift of maxima of the temperature dependence curve of platelet aggregation degree and rate. It was concluded that character of aggregation temperature dependence was governed by phase transition in platelet membrane lipids at room temperature.     

Structural features of “Carbonado” diamond polycrystalline composite materials

A thermodynamic analysis of the graphite → diamond transformation during the synthesis of diamond polycrystals is performed. It is established that the critical nucleus size decreases as the pressure increases, being 2.3 nm for p = 12 GPa. It is established when studying the crystal structure of diamond polycrystals that their block size (coherent scattering region (CSR)) is independent of the synthesis pressure and exceeds the block size of the starting graphite. It is shown that the features for martensite transformation in metals and alloys are unobservable during the synthesis of diamond polycrystals.

Causes of insufficient recovery of zirconium during acidic processing of lovozero eudialyte concentrate

The chemical and mineralogical compositions of insoluble residues of the acid decomposition of the eudialyte concentrate are investigated. It is established that one of the causes of insufficient recovery of zirconium is the presence of acid-resistant zirconium minerals (vadeite and altered eudialyte) in the residue. It seems likely that these minerals are the products of natural hydrothermal alteration of usual eudialyte. Another cause may be the fact that coarse eudialyte grains are covered with a layer of silica precipitate preventing acid diffusion.

Analysis of Local Conditions on Graphite Growth and Shape During Solidification of Ductile Cast Iron

3D X-ray tomography recordings have been used to study graphite growth during solidification of ductile cast iron. Using data from such recordings, it is shown how local growth conditions influence growth rate and morphology of nodules during solidification. Experiments show that it is common for nodules to gradually change shape during solidification so that sphericity decreases. It is also found that different shaped nodules can evolve in direct contact with liquid iron and also after they are encapsulated in austenite. It is observed that a significant proportion of originally complete spherical nodules become less spherical via formation of protrusions on the surface; these new surfaces are observed to grow relatively faster. It is shown that encapsulation of the graphite nodule by austenite may be incomplete and that at the end of solidification, partial encapsulation and the effect of the number of nearest graphite nodules play a crucial role in determining the final graphite morphology.
