A Paradigm for Exploring What the Mind Does While Deciding What It Should Do.

One widespread belief about automatic mental processes is that, among other characteristics, they are involuntary. No initial conscious intent is necessary because such processing is stimulus initiated. This claim was studied in the context of a novel task-choice procedure in which subjects were informed as to which of two tasks they should perform on a letter string either well in advance of a target, or when the target appeared. The hypothesis that initial processing of the target occurs without intent predicts that the effect of contrast reduction will be absent when the task cue appears synchronously with the target. This is because initial processing of the target should be completed during the time taken to decode the task cue. The results are inconsistent with this account. Instead, they support an account in which functional target processing is delayed until the subject knows what the task is. Some directions for future investigations are noted. Reviews the book, Behavior Modification: What It Is And How To Do It (Second Edition) by Garry Martin and Joseph Pear. Behavior Modification: What It Is And How To Do It is a very accurate title. The text is not a survey of the many different kinds of problems to which behavioural technology has been applied. Rather, it teaches the basic concepts of operant and respondent behaviour within the confines of specific areas of application with children and adults. The reviewer highly recommends Behavior Modification: What It Is And How To Do It as an excellent, rigorous, flexible, and reportedly very readable text for both undergraduate and graduate student courses for which the content is appropriate. I would hope, however, that the authors would consider offering a test bank of multiple-choice questions (preferably on microcomputer diskettes, which are becoming increasingly common) so that the text could be more easily adapted to Mastery Learning techniques which do require very frequent examinations. An already excellent textbook, with this additional capability, could make what is now a significant contribution into a classic contribution to the teaching of the concepts and techniques of behaviour analysis! Reviews the book, Behavior Modication: What It Is and How To Do It by Garry Martin and Joseph Pear (1978). Martin and Pear have put forth this very comprehensive and carefully constructed book for the aspiring behaviour analyst. But, lest we too hastily conclude that this is just another "how-to-do-it" paperback, the only similarity is its soft cover. To its credit, it is both a primer for practice and a conundrum for controversy. Thus, as a supplement to its extensive "how-to-do-it", each chapter ends with a consideration of select alternate views (behavioural and non-behavioural, empirically founded or speculative) which generate riddles for the readers. This is a refreshing and more honest approach to an endeavour which, in the hands of others, has too often merely produced a cookbook or a comic book. Judging Relationships Between Events: How Do We Do It?

A decade ago, Allan (1993) concluded that associative models provided the best account of data generated in tasks that require human observers to judge the relationship between binary events. In the intervening years, new data have been reported that provide evidence for higher-order processes. Some have argued that these new data pose a serious threat to the viability of the associative account.
