Electrochemical synthesis has garnered attention as a promising alternative to the traditional Haber–Bosch process to enable the generation of ammonia (NH3) under ambient conditions. Current electrocatalysts for the nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) to produce NH3 are comprised of noble metals or transitional metals. Here, an efficient metal‐free catalyst (BCN) is demonstrated without precious component and can be easily fabricated by pyrolysis of organic precursor. Both theoretical calculations and experiments confirm that the doped B? N pairs are the active triggers and the edge carbon atoms near to B? N pairs are the active sites toward the NRR. This doping strategy can provide sufficient active sites while retarding the competing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) process; thus, NRR with high NH3 formation rate (7.75 µg h?1 mgcat. ?1) and excellent Faradaic efficiency (13.79%) are achieved at ?0.3 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), exceeding the performance of most of the metallic catalysts.  相似文献

Dinitrogen reduction to ammonia using transition metal catalysts is central to both the chemical industry and the Earth's nitrogen cycle. In the Haber–Bosch process, a metallic iron catalyst and high temperatures (400 °C) and pressures (200 atm) are necessary to activate and cleave N?N bonds, motivating the search for alternative catalysts that can transform N2 to NH3 under far milder reaction conditions. Here, the successful hydrothermal synthesis of ultrathin TiO2 nanosheets with an abundance of oxygen vacancies and intrinsic compressive strain, achieved through a facile copper‐doping strategy, is reported. These defect‐rich ultrathin anatase nanosheets exhibit remarkable and stable performance for photocatalytic reduction of N2 to NH3 in water, exhibiting photoactivity up to 700 nm. The oxygen vacancies and strain effect allow strong chemisorption and activation of molecular N2 and water, resulting in unusually high rates of NH3 evolution under visible‐light irradiation. Therefore, this study offers a promising and sustainable route for the fixation of atmospheric N2 using solar energy.  相似文献

Electrochemical reduction of N2 to NH3 provides an alternative strategy to replace the industrial Haber–Bosch process for facile and sustainable production of NH3. The development of efficient electrocatalysts for the nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) is highly desired. Herein, a micelle‐assisted electrodeposition method is presented for the direct fabrication of porous Au film on Ni foam (pAu/NF). Benefiting from its interconnected porous architectonics, the pAu/NF exhibits superior NRR performance with a high NH3 yield rate of 9.42 µg h?1 cm?2 and a superior Faradaic efficiency of 13.36% at ?0.2 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode under the neutral electrolyte (0.1 m Na2SO4). The proposed micelle‐assisted electrodeposition strategy is highly valuable for future design of active NRR catalysts with desired compositions toward various electrocatalysis fields.  相似文献

The electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) is a promising catalytic system for N2 fixation in ambient conditions. Currently, metal‐based catalysts are the most widely studied catalysts for electrocatalytic NRR. Unfortunately, the low selectivity and poor resistance to acids and bases, and the low Faradaic efficiency, production rate, and stability of metal‐based catalysts for NRR make them uncompetitive for the synthesis of ammonia in comparison to the industrial Haber–Bosch process. Inspired by applications of carbon‐based metal‐free catalysts (CMFCs) for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR), the studies of these CMFCs in electrocatalytic NRR have attracted great attention in the past year. However, due to the differences in electrocatalytic NRR, there are several critical issues that need to be addressed in order to achieve rational design of advanced carbon‐based metal‐free electrocatalysts to improve activity, selectivity, and stability for NRR. Herein, the recent developments in the field of carbon‐based metal‐free NRR catalysts are presented, along with critical issues, challenges, and perspectives concerning metal‐free catalysts for electrocatalytic reduction of nitrogen for synthesis of ammonia at ambient conditions.  相似文献

The electrochemical N2 reduction reaction (NRR) is emerging as a promising alternative to the industrial Haber–Bosch process for distributed and modular production of NH3. Nevertheless, developing high‐efficiency catalysts to simultaneously realize both high activity and selectivity for the development of a sustainable NRR is very critical but extremely challenging. Here, a unique plasma‐assisted strategy is developed to synthesize iridium diphosphide nanocrystals with abundant surface step atoms anchored in P,N‐codoped porous carbon nanofilms (IrP2@PNPC‐NF), where the edges of the IrP2 nanocrystals are extremely irregular, and the ultrathin PNPC‐NF possesses a honeycomb‐like macroporous structure. These characteristics ensure that IrP2@PNPC‐NF delivers superior NRR performance with an NH3 yield rate of 94.0 µg h?1 mg?1cat. and a faradaic efficiency (FE) of 17.8%. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the unique NRR performance originates from the low‐coordinate step atoms on the edges of IrP2 nanocrystals, which can lower the reaction barrier to improve the NRR activity and simultaneously inhibit hydrogen evolution to achieve a high FE for NH3 formation. More importantly, such a plasma‐assisted strategy is general and can be extended to the synthesis of other high‐melting‐point noble‐metal phosphides (OsP2@PNPC‐NF, Re3P4@PNPC‐NF, etc.) with abundant step atoms at lower temperatures.  相似文献

Ammonia is a key chemical feedstock worldwide. Compared with the well-known Haber–Bosch method, electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (ENRR) can eventually consume less energy and have less CO2 emission. In this study, a plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition method is used to anchor transition metal element onto 2D conductive material. Among all attempts, Ru single-atom and Ru-cluster-embedded perovskite oxide are discovered with promising electrocatalysis performance for ENRR (NH3 yield rate of up to 137.5 ± 5.8 µg h−1 mgcat−1 and Faradaic efficiency of unexpected 56.9 ± 4.1%), reaching the top record of Ru-based catalysts reported so far. In situ experiments and density functional theory calculations confirm that the existence of Ru clusters can regulate the electronic structure of Ru single atoms and decrease the energy barrier of the first hydrogenation step (*NN to *NNH). Anchoring Ru onto various 2D perovskite oxides (LaMO-Ru, MCr, Mn, Co, or Ni) also show boosted ENRR performance. Not only this study provides an unique strategy toward transition-metal-anchored new 2D conductive materials, but also paves the way for fundamental understanding the correlation between cluster-involved single-atom sites and catalytic performance.  相似文献

Electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) is a promising process relative to energy-intensive Haber–Bosch process. While conventional electrocatalysts underperform with sluggish paths, achieving dissociation of N2 brings the key challenge for enhancing NRR. This study proposes an effective surface chalcogenation strategy to improve the NRR performance of pristine metal nanocrystals (NCs). Surprisingly, the NH3 yield and Faraday efficiency (FE) (175.6 ± 23.6 mg h–1 g–1Rh and 13.3 ± 0.4%) of Rh-Se NCs is significantly enhanced by 16 and 15 times, respectively. Detailed investigations show that the superior activity and high FE are attributed to the effect of surface chalcogenation, which not only can decrease the apparent activation energy, but also inhibit the occurrence of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) process. Theoretical calculations reveal that the strong interface strain effect within core@shell system induces a critical redox inversion, resulting in a rather low valence state of Rh and Se surface sites. Such strong correlation indicates an efficient electron-transfer minimizing NRR barrier. Significantly, the surface chalcogenation strategy is general, which can extend to create other NRR metal electrocatalysts with enhanced performance. This strategy open a new avenue for future NH3 production for breakthrough in the bottleneck of NRR.  相似文献

The electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is of great importance to tackle the rising CO2 concentration in the atmosphere. The CO2RR can be driven by renewable energy sources, producing precious chemicals and fuels, with the implementation of this process largely relying on the development of low-cost and efficient electrocatalysts. Recently, a range of heterogeneous and potentially low-cost single-atom catalysts (SACs) containing non-precious metals coordinated to earth-abundant elements have emerged as promising candidates for the CO2RR. Unfortunately, the real catalytically active centers and the key factors that govern the catalytic performance of these SACs remain ambiguous. Here, this ambiguity is addressed by developing a fundamental understanding of the CO2RR-to-CO process on SACs, as CO accounts for the major product from CO2RR on SACs. The reaction mechanism, the rate-determining steps, and the key factors that control the activity and selectivity are analyzed from both experimental and theoretical studies. Then, the synthesis, characterization, and the CO2RR performance of SACs are discussed. Finally, the challenges and future pathways are highlighted in the hope of guiding the design of the SACs to promote and understand the CO2RR on SACs.  相似文献

The ambient electrochemical N2 reduction reaction (NRR) is a future approach for the artificial NH3 synthesis to overcome the problems of high-energy consumption and environmental pollution by Haber–Bosch technology. However, the challenge of N2 activation on a catalyst surface and the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction make the current NRR unsatisfied. Herein, this work demonstrates that NbB2 nanoflakes (NFs) exhibit excellent selectivity and durability in NRR, which produces NH3 with a production rate of 30.5 µg h−1 mgcat−1 and a super-high Faraday efficiency (FE) of 40.2%. The high-selective NH3 production is attributed to the large amount of active B vacancies on the surface of NbB2 NFs. Density functional theory calculations suggest that the multiple atomic adsorption of N2 on both unsaturated Nb and B atoms results in a significantly stretched N2 molecule. The weakened NN triple bonds are easier to be broken for a biased NH3 production. The diatomic catalysis is a future approach for NRR as it shows a special N2 adsorption mode that can be well engineered.  相似文献

Semiconductor photocatalysis attracts widespread interest in water splitting, CO2 reduction, and N2 fixation. N2 reduction to NH3 is essential to the chemical industry and to the Earth's nitrogen cycle. Industrially, NH3 is synthesized by the Haber–Bosch process under extreme conditions (400–500 °C, 200–250 bar), stimulating research into the development of sustainable technologies for NH3 production. Herein, this study demonstrates that ultrathin layered‐double‐hydroxide (LDH) photocatalysts, in particular CuCr‐LDH nanosheets, possess remarkable photocatalytic activity for the photoreduction of N2 to NH3 in water at 25 °C under visible‐light irradiation. The excellent activity can be attributed to the severely distorted structure and compressive strain in the LDH nanosheets, which significantly enhances N2 chemisorption and thereby promotes NH3 formation.  相似文献

The electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) to synthesize NH3 under ambient conditions is a promising alternative route to the conventional Haber–Bosch process, but it is still a great challenge to develop electrocatalysts’ high Faraday efficiency and ammonia yield. Herein, a facile and efficient exfoliation strategy to synthesize ultrathin 2D boron and nitrogen co-doped porous carbon nanosheets (B/N C NS) via a metal–organic framework (MOF)-derived van der Waals superstructure, is reported. The results of experiments and theoretical calculations show that the doping of boron and nitrogen can modulate the electronic structure of the adjacent carbon atoms; which thus, promotes the competitive adsorption of nitrogen and reduces the energy required for ammonia synthesis. The B/N C NS exhibits excellent catalytic performance and stability in electrocatalytic NRR, with a yield rate of 153.4 µg·h−1·mg−1 cat and a Faraday efficiency of 33.1%, which is better than most of the reported NRR electrocatalysts. The ammonia yield of B/N C NS can maintain 92.7% of the initial NRR activity after 48 h stability test. The authors’ controllable exfoliation strategy using MOF-derived van der Waals superstructure can provide a new insight for the synthesis of other 2D materials.  相似文献

Direct electrocatalytic reduction of N2 to NH3 under mild conditions is attracting considerable interests but still remains enormous challenges in terms of respect of intrinsic catalytic activity and limited electrocatalytic efficiency. Herein, a photo-enhanced strategy is developed to improve the NRR activity on Cu single atoms catalysts. The atomically dispersed Cu single atoms supported TiO2 nanosheets (Cu SAs/TiO2) achieve a Faradaic Efficiency (12.88%) and NH3 yield rate (6.26 µg h−1 mgcat−1) at −0.05 V versus RHE under the light irradiation field, in which NH3 yield rate is fivefold higher than that under pure electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) process and is remarkably superior in comparison to most of the similar type electrocatalysts. The existence of external light field improves electron transfer ability between Cu O and Ti O, and thus optimizes the accumulation of surface charges on Cu sites, endowing more electrons involved in nitrogen fixation. This work reveals an atomic-scale mechanistic understanding of field effect-enhanced electrochemical performance of catalysts and it provides predictive guidelines for the rational design of photo-enhanced electrochemical N2 reduction catalysts.  相似文献

Excessive accumulation of nitrate in the environment will affect human health. To combat nitrate pollution, chemical, biological, and physical technologies have been developed recently. The researcher favors electrocatalytic reduction nitrate reaction (NO3RR) because of the low post-treatment cost and simple treatment conditions. Single-atom catalysts (SACs) offer great activity, exceptional selectivity, and enhanced stability in the field of NO3RR because of their high atomic usage and distinctive structural characteristics. Recently, efficient transition metal-based SACs (TM-SACs) have emerged as promising candidates for NO3RR. However, the real active sites of TM-SACs applied to NO3RR and the key factors controlling catalytic performance in the reaction process remain ambiguous. Further understanding of the catalytic mechanism of TM-SACs applied to NO3RR is of practical significance for exploring the design of stable and efficient SACs. In this review, from experimental and theoretical studies, the reaction mechanism, rate-determining steps, and essential variables affecting activity and selectivity are examined. The performance of SACs in terms of NO3RR, characterization, and synthesis is then discussed. In order to promote and comprehend NO3RR on TM-SACs, the design of TM-SACs is finally highlighted, together with the current problems, their remedies, and the way forward.  相似文献

As a traditional method of ammonia (NH3) synthesis, Haber–Bosch method expends a vast amount of energy. An alternative route for NH3 synthesis is proposed from nitrate (NO3) via electrocatalysis. However, the structure–activity relationship remains challenging and requires in-depth research both experimentally and theoretically. Here an N-coordinated Cu–Ni dual-single-atom catalyst anchored in N-doped carbon (Cu/Ni–NC) is reported, which has competitive activity with a maximal NH3 Faradaic efficiency of 97.28%. Detailed characterizations demonstrate that the high activity of Cu/Ni–NC mainly comes from the contribution of Cu–Ni dual active sites. That is, (1) the electron transfer (Ni → Cu) reveals the strong electron interaction of Cu–Ni dual-single-atom; (2) the strong hybridizations of Cu 3d—and Ni 3d—O 2p orbitals of NO3 can accelerate electron transfer from Cu–Ni dual-site to NO3; (3) Cu/Ni–NC can effectively decrease the rate-limiting step barriers, suppress N–N coupling for N2O and N2 formation and hydrogen production.  相似文献

Electrochemical nitrate (NO3) reduction to ammonia (NH3) offers a promising pathway to recover NO3 pollutants from industrial wastewater that can balance the nitrogen cycle and sustainable green NH3 production. However, the efficiency of electrocatalytic NO3 reduction to NH3 synthesis remains low for most of electrocatalysts due to complex reaction processes and severe hydrogen precipitation reaction. Herein, high performance of nitrate reduction reaction (NO3RR) is demonstrated on self-supported Pd nanorod arrays in porous nickel framework foam (Pd/NF). It provides a lot of active sites for H* adsorption and NO3 activation leading to a remarkable NH3 yield rate of 1.52 mmol cm−2 h−1 and a Faradaic efficiency of 78% at −1.4 V versus RHE. Notably, it maintains a high NH3 yield rate over 50 cycles in 25 h showing good stability. Remarkably, large-area Pd/NF electrode (25 cm2) shows a NH3 yield of 174.25 mg h−1, be promising candidate for large-area device for industrial application. In situ FTIR spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations analysis confirm that the enrichment effect of Pd nanorods encourages the adsorption of H species for ammonia synthesis following a hydrogenation mechanism. This work brings a useful strategy for designing NO3RR catalysts of nanorod arrays with customizable compositions.  相似文献

The design and development of efficient catalysts for electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (ENRR) under ambient conditions are critical for the alternative ammonia (NH3) synthesis from N2 and H2O, wherein iron-based electrocatalysts exhibit outstanding NH3 formation rate and Faradaic efficiency (FE). Here, the synthesis of porous and positively charged iron oxyhydroxide nanosheets by using layered ferrous hydroxide as a starting precursor, which undergoes topochemical oxidation, partial dehydrogenated reaction, and final delamination, is reported. As the electrocatalyst of ENRR, the obtained nanosheets with a monolayer thickness and 10-nm mesopores display exceptional NH3 yield rate (28.5 µg h−1 mgcat.−1) and FE (13.2%) at a potential of −0.4 V versus RHE in a phosphate buffered saline (PBS) electrolyte. The values are much higher than those of the undelaminated bulk iron oxyhydroxide. The larger specific surface area and positive charge of the nanosheets are beneficial for providing more exposed reactive sites as well as retarding hydrogen evolution reaction. This study highlights the rational control on the electronic structure and morphology of porous iron oxyhydroxide nanosheets, expanding the scope of developing non-precious iron-based highly efficient ENRR electrocatalysts.  相似文献

Electrochemical nitrate reduction to ammonia (NRA) provides an efficient, sustainable approach to convert the nitrate pollutants into value-added products, which is regarded as a promising alternative to the industrial Haber–Bosch process. Recent studies have shown that oxygen vacancies of oxide catalysts can adjust the adsorption energies of intermediates and affect their catalytic performance. Compared with other metal oxides, perovskite oxides can allow their metal cations to exist in abnormal or mixed valence states, thereby resulting in enriched oxygen vacancies in their crystal structures. Here, the catalytic activities of perovskite oxides toward NRA catalysis with respect to the amount of oxygen vacancies are explored, where four perovskite oxides with different crystal structures (including cubic LaCrO3, orthorhombic LaMnO3 and LaFeO3, hexagonal LaCoO3) are chosen and investigated. By combining X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and electrochemical measurements, it is found that the amount of oxygen vacancies in these perovskite oxides surprisingly follow the same order as their activities toward NRA catalysis (LaCrO3 < LaMnO3 < LaFeO3 < LaCoO3). Further theoretical studies reveal that the existence of oxygen vacancies in LaCoO3 perovskite can decrease the energy barriers for reduction of *HNO3 to *NO2, leading to its superior NRA performance.  相似文献

Ammonia (NH3) is a promising hydrogen (H2) carrier for future carbon-free energy systems, due to its high hydrogen content and easiness to be liquefied. Inexpensive and efficient catalysts for ammonia electro-oxidation reaction (AOR) are desired in whole ammonia-based energy systems. In this work, ultrasmall delafossite (CuFeO2) polyhedrons with exposed high-index facets are prepared by a one-step NH3-assisted hydrothermal method, serving as AOR pre-catalysts. The high-index CuFeO2 facet is revealed to facilitate surface reconstruction into active Cu-doped FeOOH nanolayers during AOR processes in ammonia alkaline solutions, which is driven by the favorable Cu leaching and terminates as the 2p levels of internal lattice oxygen change. The reconstructed heterostructures of CuFeO2 and Cu-doped FeOOH effectively activate the dehydrogenation steps of NH3 and exhibit a potential improvement of 260 mV for electrocatalytic AOR at 10 mA cm−2 compared to the pre-restructured phase. Further, density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm that a lower energy barrier of the rate-determining step (*NH3 to *NH2) is presented on high-index CuFeO2 facets covered with Cu-doped FeOOH nanolayers. Innovatively, lattice oxygen atoms in Fe-based oxides and oxyhydroxide are involved in the dehydrogenation steps of AOR as a proton acceptor, broadening the horizons for rational designs of AOR catalysts.  相似文献

Electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) to ammonia (NH3) using renewable electricity provides a promising approach towards carbon neutral. What's more, it has been regarded as the most promising alternative to the traditional Haber-Bosch route in current context of developing sustainable technologies. The development of a class of highly efficient electrocatalysts with high selectivity and stability is the key to electrochemical NRR. Among them, P-block metal-based electrocatalysts have significant application potential in NRR for which possessing a strong interaction with the N 2p orbitals. Thus, it offers a good selectivity for NRR to NH3. The density of state (DOS) near the Fermi level is concentrated for the P-block metal-based catalysts, indicating the ability of P-block metal as active sites for N2 adsorption and activation by donating p electrons. In this work, we systematically review the recent progress of P-block metal-based electrocatalysts for electrochemical NRR. The effect of P-block metal-based electrocatalysts on the NRR activity, selectivity and stability are discussed. Specifically, the catalyst design, the nature of the active sites of electrocatalysts and some strategies for boosting NRR performance, the reaction mechanism, and the impact of operating conditions are unveiled. Finally, some challenges and outlooks using P-block metal-based electrocatalysts are proposed.  相似文献
