Tensile and flexural tests on specimens cut from rectangular injection‐molded plaques show that long‐fiber filled thermoplastic composites are complex, non‐homogeneous, anistropic material systems. Like all fiber‐filled materials, they exhibit through‐thickness nonhomogeneity as indicated by differences between tensile and flexural properties. The in‐plane orientation of fibers in through‐thickness layers causes the material to have in‐plane anisotropic properties. However, these long‐fiber filled materials exhibit an unexpectedly large level of in‐plane nonhomogeneity. Also, the effective mechanical properties of these materials are strongly thickness dependent. The thinnest plaques exhibit the largest differences between the flow and cross‐flow tensile properties. These differences decrease with increasing thickness. A methodology for part design with this class of materials is discussed.  相似文献

Glass-reinforced nylon 66 polyamide (PA), polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), and polycarbonate (PC) were injection molded in a ribbed plaque. Flat strips, tensile bars, and rib sections were cut from the plaque in the flow and crossflow directions and subsequently fatigue tested under both tensile and flexural loading conditions to obtain conventional fatigue S-N (stress versus number of cycles to fail) or Wohler curves. Both the fiber alignment and the loading mode strongly influenced the resultant S-N curve. As expected, longer fatigue life results when the imposed stress is parallel to the flow direction, which in turn parallels the predominant fiber orientation direction. Also, at the same stress level, it was observed that flexural loading resulted in a much longer fatigue life compared to tensile loading. Similar S-N data were obtained in flexure for different geometries, such as rib or flat cross sections, as long as the local fiber orientation was similar. Attempts to use an empirical relationship to rationalize predicted fatigue data based upon tensile or breaking strength were not successful. Polym. The injection molding process is widely accepted for the processing of engineering thermoplastics due to the ease of manufacturing complex designs. Weld-line is a defect occurring in injection molded parts when two flow fronts join each other. At weld-line locations, parts exhibit lower mechanical strength mainly due to inadequate intermolecular diffusion and fiber orientation anisotropy. The present work is aimed at investigating and comparing weld-line strength for unfilled and glass-filled polyamide-6 materials. To achieve this, polyamide-6 unfilled, 30% glass-filled, and 50% glass-filled materials are used to manufacture plaques. The special-purpose mold is designed to obtain plaques with and without weld-lines with help of Moldflow simulations. The specimens for tensile tests are then cut from molded plaques and experimental testing is conducted to evaluate tensile properties. Fractured surfaces of specimens are examined using a scanning electron microscope. The results demonstrated a significant drop in tensile strength and modulus for glass-filled material weld-line specimens when compared to specimens of no weld-line. However, for unfilled specimens, tensile strength and modulus are almost the same for samples with and without weld-line. A reduction in tensile strength of 13%, 49%, and 57% is observed for unfilled, 30% glass-filled, and 50% glass-filled polyamide-6 material respectively.  相似文献

Silane‐grafted polypropylene manufactured by a reactive grafting process was used as the coupling agent in polypropylene/glass‐fiber composites to improve the interaction of the interfacial regions. Polypropylene reinforced with 30% by weight of short glass fibers was injection‐molded and the mechanical behaviors were investigated. The results indicate that the mechanical properties (tensile strength, tensile modulus, flexural strength, flexural modulus, and Izod impact strength) of the composite increased remarkably as compared with the noncoupled glass fiber/polypropylene. SEM of the fracture surfaces of the coupled composites shows a good adhesion at the fiber/matrix interface: The fibers are coated with matrix polymer, and a matrix transition region exists near the fibers. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The effect of molding parameters on material distribution and mechanical properties of co‐injection molded plates has been studied using experimental design. The plates were molded with a polyamide 6 (PA 6) as skin and a 20% glass fiber‐reinforced polybutyleneterephtalate (PBTP) as core. Five molding parameters—injection velocity, mold temperature, skin and core temperature, and core content—were varied in two levels. The statistical analysis of the results showed that three parameters—Injection velocity, core temperature, and core content—were the most significant in affecting skin/core distribution. A high core temperature was the most significant variable promoting a constant core thickness, while core content was the most significant factor influencing a breakthrough of the core. Mechanical properties, such as flexural and impact strength showed a high correlation with the skin/core distribution. The slight increase in falling weight impact strength of the sandwich molded plates, compared to similar plates molded from PBTP only, could be explained from the failure process, which initiates in the brittle core and propagates through the ductile skins.  相似文献

Interply and intraply hybrid composites based on Bisphenol A Dicyanate ester (BADCy), high strength carbon fibers T300, and high modulus carbon fibers M40 were prepared by monofilament dip‐winding and press molding technique. The tensile, flexural, interlaminar shear properties and SEM analysis of the hybrid composites with different fiber content and fiber arrangement were investigated. The results indicated that the mechanical properties of intraply hybrid composites were mainly determined by fiber volume contents. When the ratio of fiber volume content was close to 1:1, the intraply hybrid composites possessed lowest tensile and flexural strength. The mechanical properties of interply hybrid composite mainly depended on the fiber arrangement, instead of the fiber volume contents. The hybrid composites using T300 fiber layout as outside layer possessed high flexural strength and low flexural modulus, which was close to that of T300/BADCy composites. The hybrid composites ([(M40)x/(T300)y]S) using M40 fiber layout as outside layer and T300 fibers in the mid‐plane had high flexural modulus and interlaminar shear strength. POLYM. The effects of processing conditions on fiber length degradation were investigated in order to produce composites with higher performance. Nylon‐6 was compounded with glass fibers in a twin‐screw extruder for various combinations of screw speed and feed rate. Collected samples were injection molded and Izod impact and tensile tests were performed in order to observe the effect of fiber length on the mechanical properties. Also, by using the extruded and injection molded smaples, fiber length distribution curves were obtained for all the experimental runs. Results show that when the shear rate is increased through the alteration of the screw speed and/or the feed rate, the average fiber length decreases. Impact strength, tensile modulus and tensile strength increase, whereas elongation at break decreases with the average fiber length.  相似文献

Recycled high‐density polyethylene (RHDPE)/coir fiber (CF)‐reinforced biocomposites were fabricated using melt blending technique in a twin‐screw extruder and the test specimens were prepared in an automatic injection molding machine. Variation in mechanical properties, crystallization behavior, water absorption, and thermal stability with the addition of fly ash cenospheres (FACS) in RHDPE/CF composites were investigated. It was observed that the tensile modulus, flexural strength, flexural modulus, and hardness properties of RHDPE increase with an increase in fiber loading from 10 to 30 wt %. Composites prepared using 30 wt % CF and 1 wt % MA‐g‐HDPE exhibited optimum mechanical performance with an increase in tensile modulus to 217%, flexural strength to 30%, flexural modulus to 97%, and hardness to 27% when compared with the RHDPE matrix. Addition of FACS results in a significant increase in the flexural modulus and hardness of the RHDPE/CF composites. Dynamic mechanical analysis tests of the RHDPE/CF/FACS biocomposites in presence of MA‐g‐HDPE revealed an increase in storage (E′) and loss (E″) modulus with reduction in damping factor (tan δ), confirming a strong influence between the fiber/FACS and MA‐g‐HDPE in the RHDPE matrix. Differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis thermograms also showed improved thermal properties in the composites when compared with RHDPE matrix. The main motivation of this study was to prepare a value added and low‐cost composite material with optimum properties from consumer and industrial wastes as matrix and filler. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The self‐interference flow (SIF) of a melt in a cavity during injection molding is introduced. It comes from two streams of the melt being split by a patented mold gate called a twin gate. The effects of this flow on the static and dynamic mechanical properties, thickness distribution, and shrinkage in the transverse direction (TD) of injection‐molded isotactic polypropylene parts are discussed. SIF has an influence on the static mechanical properties, especially the impact strength. There are slight increases in the tensile strength and Young's modulus and an increase of approximately 70–90% in the impact strength in comparison with the properties of samples obtained by a conventional flow process with a common pin gate. Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis studies show an increase in the storage modulus for SIF samples. Results obtained from research into the effect of the mold temperature and injection pressure on the impact strength show that the impact strength of SIF specimens has a weaker dependence on the mold temperature and injection pressure. This study was focused on the improvement of mechanical properties of injection molded wheat‐pulp polypropylene (PP) composites through fiber surface modifications. Ten different sizing and finishing agents, including fats, starch derivatives, and polysiloxanes were used as surfactants for the cellulosic pulp. As a result of polydimethylsiloxane treatment (0.3 wt %), impact strength was increased by 85%, tensile strength by 23%, and an augmentation in tensile modulus of 12% was also achieved. In consideration of the dynamic mechanical properties, the stronger effects of the modifiers on the storage‐ modulus were observed with increasing temperature. A new approach quantifying the extent of the dispersion of the pulp fibers using image analysis through transmission light micrographs was tested. The enhancement of tensile strength, tensile modulus, and impact strength could be attributed to the improved dispersion of the cellulosic fibers. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A special mold (Rotation, Compression, and Expansion Mold) was used to impose a controlled shear action during injection molding of short glass fiber reinforced polypropylene discs. This was achieved by superimposing an external rotation to the pressure‐driven advancing flow front during the mold filling stage. Central gated discs were molded with different cavity rotation velocities, inducing distinct levels of fiber orientation through the thickness. The mechanical behavior of the moldings was assessed, in tensile and flexural modes on specimens cut at different locations along the flow path. Complete discs were also tested in four‐point flexural and in impact tests. The respective results are analyzed and discussed in terms of relationships between the developed fiber orientation level and the mechanical properties. The experimental results confirm that mechanical properties of the moldings depend strongly on fiber orientation and can thus be tailored by the imposed rotation during molding. POLYM. ENG. The mechanical and fracture properties of injection molded short glass fiber)/short carbon fiber reinforced polyamide 6 (PA 6) hybrid composites were studied. The short fiber composites of PA 6 glass fiber, carbon fiber, and the hybrid blend were injection molded using a conventional machine whereas the two types of sandwich skin–core hybrids were coinjection molded. The fiber volume fraction for all formulations was fixed at 0.07. The overall composite density, volume, and weight fraction for each formulation was calculated after composite pyrolysis in a furnace at 600°C under nitrogen atmosphere. The tensile, flexural, and single‐edge notch‐bending tests were performed on all formulations. Microstructural characterizations involved the determination of thermal properties, skin–core thickness, and fiber length distributions. The carbon fiber/PA 6 (CF/PA 6) formulation exhibits the highest values for most tests. The sandwich skin‐core hybrid composites exhibit values lower than the CF/PA 6 and hybrid composite blends for the mechanical and fracture tests. The behaviors of all composite formulations are explained in terms of mechanical and fracture properties and its proportion to the composite strength, fiber orientation, interfacial bonding between fibers and matrix, nucleating ability of carbon fibers, and the effects of the skin and core structures. Failure mechanisms of both the matrix and the composites, assessed by fractographic studies in a scanning electron microscope, are discussed. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Innovative polymers and composites are broadening the range of applications and commercial production of thermoplastics. Long fiber‐reinforced thermoplastics have received much attention due to their processability by conventional technologies. This study describes the development of long fiber reinforced polypropylene (LFPP) composites and the effect of fiber length and compatibilizer content on their mechanical properties. LFPP pellets of different sizes were prepared by extrusion process using a specially designed radial impregnation die and these pellets were injection molded to develop LFPP composites. Maleic‐anhydride grafted polypropylene (MA‐g‐PP) was chosen as a compatibilizer and its content was optimized by determining the interfacial properties through fiber pullout test. Critical fiber length was calculated using interfacial shear strength. Fiber length distributions were analyzed using profile projector and image analyzer software system. Fiber aspect ratio of more than 100 was achieved after injection molding. The results of the tensile and flexural properties of injection molded long glass fiber reinforced polypropylene with a glass fiber volume fraction of 0.18 are presented. It was found that the differences in pellet sizes improve the mechanical properties by 3–8%. Efforts are made to theoretically predict the tensile strength and modulus using the Kelly‐Tyson and Halpin‐Tsai model, respectively. POLYM. Fiber reinforced plastic parts manufactured by injection molding have heterogeneous stiffness and strength behavior due to the molding process influence on the fiber orientations. This paper presents a methodology for determining the process‐dependent anisotropic and inhomogeneous mechanical properties of injection‐molded parts using a thickness‐wise layered homogenization technique. This technique produces an equivalent laminated meso‐scale representation at any location in the part and enables point‐wise application of the existing laminated plate and shell theories. The methodology is demonstrated by illustrating property variations in edge‐gated and center‐gated plaques. Spatial variations of elastic moduli, shear modulus, and Poisson's ratio are modeled. The model can be conveniently embedded within finite element structural analyses accounting for the process‐dependent material heterogeneities within the structure. POLYM. Shish‐kebab, which is endowed with superior strength and modulus, provides the potential to fabricate self‐reinforced polymer products. However, the injection‐molded product usually exhibits a typical skin–core structure, and the shish‐kebab is only located in an extremely thin shear layer. Therefore, the controlling and tailoring of crystal structures in complex flow field to improve the mechanical properties of the injection‐molded sample are still a great challenge. Herein, for the first time, high‐density polyethylene sample with a novel macroscopic alternating skin–core structure is achieved using a melt multi‐injection molding technique. Results show that, with increasing the amount of melt injection, the layers of skin–core structure increase in the form of arithmetic progression, and therefore the tensile strength of the samples progressively increases due to an increase of shish‐kebab content. This study demonstrates a new approach to achieve multilayer homogeneous materials with excellent tensile strength via macroscopic structural design during the practical molding process.  相似文献

Composites were prepared with chemically modified banana fibers in polypropylene (PP). The effects of 40‐mm fiber loading and resin modification on the physical, mechanical, thermal, and morphological properties of the composites were evaluated with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Infrared (IR) spectroscopy, and so on. Maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MA‐g‐PP) compatibilizer was used to improve the fiber‐matrix adhesion. SEM studies carried out on fractured specimens indicated poor dispersion in the unmodified fiber composites and improved adhesion and uniform dispersion in the treated composites. A fiber loading of 15 vol % in the treated composites was optimum, with maximum mechanical properties and thermal stability evident. The composite with 5% MA‐g‐PP concentration at a 15% fiber volume showed an 80% increase in impact strength, a 48% increase in flexural strength, a 125% increase in flexural modulus, a 33% increase in tensile strength, and an 82% increase in tensile modulus, whereas the heat deflection temperature increased by 18°C. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this article, mechanical performance of isothalic polyester‐based untreated woven jute‐fabric composites subjected to various types of loading has been experimentally investigated. The laminates were prepared by hand lay‐up technique in a mold. Specimens for tests were fabricated as per ASTM standards. All the tests (except impact) were conducted on closed loop servo hydraulic MTS 810 material test system using data acquisition software Test Works‐II. From the results obtained, it was found that the tensile strength and tensile modulus of jute‐fabric composite are 83.96% and 118.97% greater than the tensile strength and modulus of unreinforced resin, respectively. The results of other properties, such as flexural, in‐plane shear, interlaminar shear, impact, etc., also revealed that the isothalic‐polyester‐based jute‐fabric composite have good mechanical properties and can be a potential material for use in medium load‐bearing applications. The failure mechanism and fiber‐matrix adhesion were analyzed by scanning electron microscope. In the sandwich injection molding process (co‐injection), two different polymer melts are sequentially injected into a mold to form a part with a skin/core structure. Sandwich molding can be used for recycling, improving barrier and electrical properties, or producing parts with tailored mechanical properties. In this study the evaluation of flexural modulus and impact strength of co‐injected plaques have been investigated. Virgin and short glass fiber reinforced (10 and 40%) polypropylene were used in six different combinations of sandwiched layers. The skin and core thicknesses were measured by optical microscopy and used to calculate the theoretical flexural modulus, which was compared to the experimentally measured modulus. Fiber orientation states were also observed by scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) at some specific locations and their effect on mechanical properties discussed. The experimental results indicate that an important improvement in transverse modulus, near the gate, is obtained when the virgin polypropylene (PP) is used as a skin and 40% short glass fiber polypropylene (PP40) as core. Tensile and fatigue properties of an injection molded short E‐glass fiber reinforced polyamide‐6,6 have been studied as a function of two key injection molding parameters, namely melt temperature and hold pressure. It was observed that tensile and fatigue strengths of specimens normal to the flow direction were lower than that in the flow direction, indicating inherent anisotropy caused by injection molding. Tensile and fatigue strengths of specimens with weld line were significantly lower than that without weld lines. For specimens in the flow direction, normal to the flow direction and with weld line, tensile strength and fatigue strength increased with increasing melt temperature as well as increasing hold pressure. The effect of specimen orientation on the tensile and fatigue strengths is explained in terms of the difference in fiber orientation and skin‐core morphology of the specimens. POLYM.
